Barrow is pronounced like bear-o. If we know students learn best when they are engaged, focused and riveted by what they are doing – then what are we doing to engage them?
In a small north Georgia town in Barrow County, a group of teachers are doing amazing things to engage students.
They first moved their entire school system’s internet connection off of a commercial network and onto a high speed communications network provided by the state for education and research purposes. Peachnet connects over 30 universities, colleges and others sites in Georgia – and has fast become known as one of the most complete networks of its kind in the US.
So, now they can use technology – the stuff kid’s love – to connect classrooms with scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology and elsewhere around the world – without disruption, timeouts or interconnectivity issues. Students and teachers get to see first-hand what is being researched by scientists in their laboratories.
From a biologist studying the ecological impact of invasive coral species on native coral populations in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico,
to a researcher seeking to develop a nanoparticle and cell-based gene delivery systems that can
overcome biological transport barriers and treat disease.
It is students and teachers connecting to real research labs and environments to study science… to better understand math concepts and learn more about how to use technology.
What happens is real learning from real life experiences – moving from what is typically taught as math and science concepts to an ability to teach with actual, real life science and math experiences!
“Direct to Discovery” also encourages students to use technology for their own purposes…making what is real in their personal worlds come to life as they communicate that importance to others.
Direct to Discovery today is a collaboration between teachers in Barrow County, Georgia and Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology who use digital media and interactive TV to enhance Middle and High School student engagement in the learning of Science and Math.
The program is scalable, the vision is global and the team is working hard to establish the sustainability of bringing such diverse worlds together – day in and day out, year after year.
With Direct to Discovery, we engage our youth in the conversations concerning real issues in our world today – so that they can be ready to step in and be a part of the solution tomorrow.
