THE MYTH
(For reference only; may appear in its entirety on HTML site.)
Many lifetimes ago, the River Spirit lived in a land split by a giant river. Beneath the lily pads, glistening fish could be seen half a mile deep, and glorious peacocks strutted along its banks. All the colors of the sun hitting the water could be seen from either horizon. When she was just a baby, her father – a fisherman – caught a strange fish and the local seer read a great fortune in its entrails. This girl would grow up to be a beauty like no other, the embodiment of love, and her union would bring about a change from the Heavens. Their very village would be transformed.
At last the River Maiden reached marrying age, and suitors came bearing all manner of gifts to her home on the banks of the river. First came the locals, young fishermen, but they were rejected. Then came artists and entertainers from neighboring towns, then even lords from distant lands bearing gold, but all were scorned. The young beauty could hardly look away from her own brilliant reflection.
Days turned to weeks into years and the rains stopped coming. The river dried out. Even the peacocks ran off. The Heavens held back their tears, waiting to shed them in joy, but the young River Maiden locked herself in her chambers where she sang and danced all alone. The land grew bone dry and devoid of color, bugs gathered in swarms over the dry river bed, yet still she gazed into her mirror.
At long last, dark clouds filled the sky. Thunder called her outside. As she looked up, a single bolt of lightning struck right through her and into the hard dry land, cleaving it in two. She peered over the edge of this chasm, where she saw naught but her own gorgeous reflection in pristine waters below. Unable to resist, she threw herself in, and the land closed tight around her.
Now this River Spirit lives in the sewers, a horrid bloated beast of snails and horns, covered with weeds – a true River Hag – whose charms beguile only those equally blinded by vanity. While the honeyed river may hint at her long-gone beauty, there is no escaping the horror of her true nature, as her grotesque features are reflected in the mirror-like tails of the shrieking peacocks who followed her down.
Chamber Intro
Armed with the King’s double-headed axe, you come to a great underground RIVER that swells its banks beneath the Mountain’s vast, interior cliffs. The river runs THICK LIKE GOLDEN HONEY, and the flowing water makes its own music, soft and lilting like an orchestra of flutes and female song (think PORTISHEAD).
As you gaze into the Chamber, PEACOCKS emerge from the walls, their tails casting dark blue-green lights that dance amongst the water’s currents. Every watered surface reflects MIRROR-LIKE, so that it appears that the River Chamber goes on endlessly. The beauty is mesmerizing. Your eyes take in all they can until they fall on a LARGE ROCK by the river bank with these words carved in it:
LOOK UPON NOUGHT BUT WHAT IS REVEALED
IN THINE OWN TRUE REFLECTION.

Your eyes fall on a LARGE ROCK with words carved in it.
As you puzzle over the sign, a large rodent scurries up and pauses just a few feet away. Suddenly its bulbous shape distends horribly as it appears to literally blow itself up. You find yourself facing a GIANT PORCUPINE with quills extending like SPEARS to the roof of the river tunnel! The creature glows a dark blood tangerine color. This is the Orange Chamber Guardian.
As you puzzle over the sign, a large rodent scurries up. Its shape distends horribly as it blows itself up into a GIANT PORCUPINE with spear-like quills.
You draw your axe and YELL to scare it off. The Porcupine just yawns.
GIANT PORCUPINE
I know. I scared you. That’s ma’ job. ‘I got quills to prove ma skills.’
NOBODY
Uh, hi. Look, I’ve got to get back to my people, but I’m out of juice.
You hold up your bottle and eye the honey-looking river.
GIANT PORCUPINE
Not so fast. You gotta prove your worth when you step on ma’ turf.
NOBODY
Just tell me what I need to do.
GIANT PORCUPINE
It’s not what you do, Seeker; it’s what you say, Speaker.
NOBODY
More questions?
GIANT PORCUPINE
Thas’ right. This river AIN’T free, and it’s time to pay ma’ fee!

Another series of four interlocked questions will serve to align the user with a range of color options, depending upon their answers. ]
After being aligned with possible drink colors and making your choice, you return to the entrance to the Chamber. The Giant Porcupine folds down his quills.
GIANT PORCUPINE
Now your juice has some spruce. Spiffy color.
NOBODY
And your Lady has her fan.
GIANT PORCUPINE
Well, she’s not really my Lady. She’s the lovely River Spirit. With oh so much more… in store.
With a laugh, the Giant Porcupine shrinks into the darkness. You spy a CANOE with two small oars tied to a post on the bank.
GIANT PORCUPINE
Complete my tasks and you just might drink her in with your own eyes. If, as it seems, you’re the one of her dreams.
NOBODY
Her dreams? Me?
GIANT PORCUPINE
Sooo modest. Trust me, that gal knows a catch when she sees it.

You move to the water’s edge to refill the bottle. A small CANOE with two slim oars bobs nearby, moored by a thick knot of ROPE tied to a POST. An amber waterfall spouts up and falls again in drops of pale gold. A COPPER-COLORED beauty with GOLD BRACELETS ringing her wrist and ankles steps from the spray.
This is the RIVER SPIRIT (RS). As water sparkles around her feet, she lifts her arms and bracelets jangle like small bells. She carries a shining TORTOISE-SHELL COMB and proceeds to comb her HONEY COLORED HAIR. In the background, PEACOCKS glide along the river banks, their TAILS FLASHING LIKE MIRRORS.
Beautiful beyond imagination, the River Spirit lifts her arms, and bracelets jangle like small bells. Her every movement stirs longing.
RIVER SPIRIT
I am lonelier than one so handsome could know. Come and be mine.
You catch a glimpse of her reflected in the tail of a passing peacock. Though mesmerized, you remember the Guardian’s words.
NOBODY
I fear I’m not worthy. Is there any way… to prove myself?
RIVER SPIRIT
I need see no more. I choose you for an eternity of love.
You think of your people and resist her call.
NOBODY
Please, I wish to show myself worthy of such beauty.
RIVER SPIRIT
But you are perfect. Above all others.
She moves closer. Irresistible. You look at your still empty bottle.
NOBODY
You flatter me. Now humor me, and tell me your tale.

.
NOW A BLOATED DEAD FISH OF A FIGURE, the river’s sewage clings to her. Her eyes are dull snails; a gnarled horn grows at her forehead, her skin blue and swollen, her tongue a long dark silver fish flicking in anticipation of his drowning. This is the image we clearly see on the tails of the now screeching peacocks.
Behind her, across the river bank, again you see the message on the rock:
IF THOU SHOULDST ENTER, LOOK UPON NOUGHT BUT
WHAT IS REVEALED IN THINE OWN TRUE REFLECTION.
The River Spirit is revealed as her true self – THE L.A. RIVER HAG, a creature made monstrous by her own vanity. Her grotesque features are now clearly reflected in the mirror-like tails of the shrieking peacocks that followed her down.
You clasp your axe and eye the canoe.
RIVER HAG
See? You are perfect. Come to me.
NOBODY
I am far from perfect. But now my elixir has a name, and my people need me to go on.
RIVER HAG
Surely they can’t be as beautiful as I.
You dip your bottle in the river and fill it.
RIVER HAG
Does my voice not enchant you?
NOBODY
All I hear is the screeching of peacocks, for their tails reflect the truth – the weakness of ego, and the ugly price of vanity.
The horrid beast stretches out her arms and parts her lips. You swing the axe with all your might, CUTTING THE KNOT that ties fast the canoe.
The King’s words echo as it slices through…
Sleeping King
“Cut quick and fast that way is freedom won.”
Leaping into the canoe, you let the current take you to safety. < Portion of the script provided for audition purposes only >
