A Historical Overview and Legacy of Cuban Architecture.

Well, this is a unique subject, because there's no city in the world like Havana. Havana's series of plazas encompasses over 16 miles of covered spaces; Vedado was beautifully oriented to the winds; the top cupola of el Capitolo National was raised so it would be 3 feet taller than the one in Washington. Havana can be considered the first green city.

Here are a number of reoccurring elements in Cuban architecture:

-The monumental scale

-The geometrical grid system

-The narrow streets

-The pedestrian sidewalks and street corners

-The promenades and avenues

-The plazas

-The public arcades

-The continuous facades

-The medium to high urban densities

-The mixed-uses

-The public transit system

-The green presence

-The monuments and sculptured fountains

-The thresh-hold

-The interior courtyard

-The interior galleries

-The great roofs

-The latticed and shuttered bay-windows

-The stained-glass windows

-The articulation of the different urban and architectural elements.

From Aristotle: "Man never thinks if he doesn't have an image." From Ernesto Rogers, "Tradition is a continuous flow." And from Roger Scruton: "Architecture can only be understood in imaginative terms. Images constitute statements at and of each moment in time. All together they constitute the assemblage of history and man's identity." For every image there is a thought, which leads to a creation, that is then perceived by others. Then feedback is given and the process begins again.

Havana and its Landscapes: A Vision for Future Reconstruction in Cuba.

Cuba can be rebuilt, but we must avoid American-style suburbanization and use a public transit system that would make Havana a pedestrian city once more. This would include designated public space every seven blocks, surrounded by avenues for mixed use. Modernity can be achieved while maintaining a traditional Cuba.
