“He’s all yours, Coach,” Lisa said as they walked into his office. She took the young man by the elbow and led him to a chair. He was taken aback to see that Coach shared an office with his assistant. I wonder why that is. The simple, tastefully done room was one of the most welcoming offices he had ever entered. Another picture of Vince Lombardi hung above Coach’s desk, and several football trophies lined the back wall. Two flat-screen monitors sat side by side on each desk, along with lots of pictures of family and friends. A small Make-a-Wish Foundation semi tractor rested on the front of Coach’s desk, and several little knickknacks sat on Lisa’s. The office itself was not at all what he had pictured for someone as prominent as “Coach.” He had expected the big, cold administrative office of a wealthy corporate executive—too much room for what was needed, but not big enough for the occupant’s ego.
“Hello, young man! Pleasure to meet you! I take it you found the place okay?” Coach thrust out his hand.
“Yes, piece of cake!”
“We’re honored to have you, Michael. Please, have a seat.” He indicated the chair Lisa had led him to. “Michael, eh?’
“Yes, sir.”
“Your name is of Hebrew origin, you know.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“It means ‘who resembles God?’ Michael is the archangel who defeats the dragon. He and Gabriel are angels given personal names in the canonical Bible. Numerous saints, emperors, and kings have borne the name, and there are many variants, male and female. Pretty impressive moniker you have there, son!”
Flattered by the unusual compliment, he tried to figure out why knowing this obscure bit of information about his name felt so good.
“Tell me a bit about yourself,” Coach continued. “Scott says you have a beautiful family.”
“Yes. Yes, sir, thank you. I do at that. My wife Pam and my daughters, Madison and Renee.”
“Ah, daughters. I have a boy, Tyler, who’s now off at sea in the Navy. A great kid that I’m quite proud of. But my daughter Tiffany, what a treat. I finally admitted it one day—she owns me. Still has me wrapped right around her little fingers.”
“Yes, girls seem to have that effect on their daddies.”
“I understand, too, that you’re a bit of a golf fan?”
“I don’t get out much anymore. I played on my high school team and quite a bit in college, but now the family comes first.”
“Tell me, son, what outcome do you expect to accomplish as a result of your meeting with me today?”
“What?” Michael stalled as he groped for an answer.
“You heard me. Why are you here?” Coach leaned forward and looked him straight in the eye.
The comfortable office suddenly took on the cold objectivity of the big corporate room he had envisioned. Cold sweat broke out on his palms. Heat spread up his neck onto his face. He shot a look at Lisa, who’d just picked up the ringing phone. She was not paying any attention to them. His gaze hit the floor. Even with Lisa talking, it seemed strangely quiet as Coach waited in silence.
“I don’t really know, sir.” He raised his head but didn’t meet Coach’s steady gaze. “Scott said I needed to meet you. So here I am.”
“I see. This meeting will be easy then. If you have no expectations, I have no expectations to meet. We can adjourn right now.”
As Michael continued to avoid Coach’s gaze, he noticed the small plaque sitting on the desk that read OUTCOME BASED LIFE. He got the point.
