We had a mission, with a capital “M,” assault Omaha Beach, breach the German beach defense, seize their bunkers and secure the landing site before dark. We ate a 3:00 a.m. breakfast of coffee, hotcakes, sausage, and eggs. It would be our last hot meal for weeks.
Just before dawn we were jammed shoulder to shoulder in the pitch dark, halfway across the channel, onto our 60 foot landing craft tank. Each LCT consisted of two jeeps in the center of the craft, with thirty-five GIs clinging to its edge, pitching in the water. H-Hour for OMAHA Beach, my unit’s objective was set for 6:30 a.m. I took a glance at my watch as the sun came up. It was 5:45.
As we got nearer to shore, 155mm howitzer artillery shells from German bunkers built into ninety-foot high bluffs just above the beachhead began to rain shells on us.
Our LCT rammed into a sandbar. In water up to our chests we rushed to get to the beach. I crawled under the bodies. I stayed frozen and waiting until I heard a voice. It was a Combat Officer’s voice.
CORPORAL WEISS ACTOR V/O:
I got off the beach, I don’t remember how. I reached the top of the cliff overlooking the beach. I looked at my watch again. It was 10:00 a.m.
It took what felt like a lifetime to secure OMAHA, seize or pulverize the German bunkers, drive the Wehrmacht from the cliffs and start offloading an invading army’s worth of tanks, field artillery, field kitchens, fuel trucks, jeeps, medical gear, doctors, nurses, and more infantry regiments than Ancient Rome had legions.
