Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers suffer from debilitating illnesses such as cancer, HIV and neurologic disorders.
For some of these patients, currently available medications are not effective in treating the devastating symptoms of their disease.
Right now the NY legislature is considering a bill that would legalize medical marijuana as a treatment to help alleviate symptoms of some of these diseases.
But for many new Yorkers, waiting for this bill to pass just isn’t an option
Meet oliver, one patient who lives with a severe form of epilepsy, and his mother Missy, who is fighting for a strain of medical marijuana to help reduce his seizures.
Other patients like Beverly are hoping medical marijuana can be legalized to help alleviate the side effects of her cancer treatment
But Beverly, smoking marijuana reduces the stress of her illness and allows her to get her appetite back
As of 2014, 20 states and the district of Columbia have passed laws allowing patients to access medical marijuana.
Some families have even left New York – or are considering a move – to states like Colorado where MMJ is legal
A recent poll by Quinnipiac revealed that 88 percent of New Yorkers support legalization of medical marijuana. Yet the bill continues to sit on the desks of opposing legislatures in Albany. While New Yorkers anxiously wait for relief.
