In response to this academic dilemma, a set of national education standards called Common Core was created to better prepare students for college and career.
But the authors of Common Core had little or no experience in the classroom. And instead of learning from states that lead on education, like Massachusetts, the authors focused on creating standards that were mediocre and attainable by all states.
That included an emphasis on fads like “21st century skills” – soft skills like global awareness and creativity over academic content like literacy and mathematics. Unfortunately, as Connecticut and West Virginia have demonstrated, this approach doesn’t work.
Despite these concerns about the quality of standards, many states have been eager to implement Common Core.
But it isn’t coming cheap. In fact, research from the Pioneer Institute projects that complete implementation could total nearly $16 billion across the 46 participating states.
This estimate doesn’t account for the additional reforms that Common Core might require, like frequent upgrades to classroom technology and mandatory online testing tools.
Parents may be less-than-thrilled to foot the tax bill for an unproven Common Core education. But the legal bills could be even worse.
In the United States, federal law prohibits national public school programs like Common Core. That hasn’t stopped the Department of Education’s creative efforts to implement the standards. Ultimately, this could lead to court battles, wasted tax dollars, and a lack of direction in our children’s public schools.
Common Core simply isn’t the education fix our children deserve. Already, the constitutionally-questionable standards are failing to deliver a quality education while costing a fortune. Instead of the Core, let’s look to states that lead on education, and learn from them.
