*Start by removing cobwebs and dust from the ceiling with a feather duster or the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner
*Clean off marks and grease spots – for this try warm soapy water or antibacterial spray and if they won’t shift try a little cream cleaner on a dry cloth. Don’t rub too hard as you may take of more than you intended
*Dust and clean light fittings – inset spot lights will just need a wipe over with a soft damp cloth – be careful as these can be very hot if they have been on. Also dust skirting boards
*Strip lighting will need the plastic shade removing and cleaning before replacing
*If you have extensive staining on ceiling or walls this may need to be repainted. Also textured or delicate finishes may need specialist cleaning– If in doubt ASK YOUR LANDLORD
TOP TIP: Think about how you would expect a new kitchen to look in a new house – aim for that!
*Fridges, freezers and cookers are some of the main places where people fall down on cleaning and risk losing part of their deposit.
Unplug or switch off and make sure food is removed - check the freezer for that rogue fish finger
Put newspaper around and under the fridge to catch melting ice and water drips
To defrost the freezer section, place a container of hot water in to the compartment and leave to steam for 20 to 30 minutes – replace with more hot water after 10
Take out all the shelves, draws and trays from the fridge and wash separately in warm soapy water, rinse and leave to dry
Go back to the freezer section and gently knock off any lumps of ice and start wiping the surfaces clean with a cloth and some anti bacterial spray
Wipe down every surface inside the fridge paying special attention to the light fitting, the drainage hole and the seals around the door
Don’t forget the hinged side of the door
Replace the shelves and don’t forget to clean the outside of the fridge
Take the soap drawer out and wash this separately in warm soapy water. If there’s any mold in evidence you may need to use some bleach in the water to get rid of this
Check the seal and wipe all round it until your cloth comes out clean.
Use a glass cleaner for the door and wipe down inside and out.
Wipe all the outside surfaces paying special attention to the knobs and dials - remember your cocktail stick!
First wipe away any dirt from the hob.
Ceramic hobs can be cleaned with a little cream cleaner and a sponge, rinsed and dried with a paper towel.
Burnt on spills can be removed with a special tool for ceramic hobs – use this at a slight angle and use gentle strokes. You may have been given a special cleaning kit to use on your hob – this will contain the scraper you need for burnt on bits and it’s own cream cleaner.
Clean surrounds and sealants - a toothbrush can be hand here
If you have a gas hob you can usually take the burners apart and the knobs off: clean these in warm, soapy water while you tackle the hob
Clean the whole hob and the surrounds, splash backs and sealant, and wipe and dry with paper towels
TOP TIP: If you’re using a spray oven cleaner inside your oven and on the shelves you’ll get better results if you can leave this to do it’s work overnight
If you are using an over cleaning kit you’ll have a bag to put the shelves in and a spray to clean the inside of the oven.
Hazard warning: Oven cleaners can be very caustic so should be handled with care
Thoroughly clean the inside of your oven.
The door of your oven needs special attention. The door should come apart quite easily. Clean everything with cream cleaner and the gentle scouring side of a kitchen sponge. Make sure you clean the hinges and edges.
TOP TIP: Any stainless steal surfaces in your kitchen can be given a final wipe over with a little baby oil to give a really professional finish
If your cooker is freestanding, clean the sides – cookers must not be moved
Cooker Hood & Extractor unit
Clean all over the cooker hood with warm soapy water or a little cream cleaner, rinse and dry with paper towels
Take out the grills that hold the filters - these can be cleaned in the dishwasher or sink
Replace the filters - your replacement filter may be paper or it may come as a sheet of wadding, that simply needs cutting to size (show both types of filter)
If your light shades and knobs will come off easily, give them a good wash in soapy water
Replace any bulbs that are not working
Clean underneath, not forgetting the hinges and replace filter.
Remember to clean all your cooker sockets and switches with a little cream cleaner on a soft, dry cloth and wipe with paper towels.
