A crisis is accompanied with disorientations and chaos. But for some it means a defining moment to rethink and unite to design better solutions.
Year 2011 accounts a similar challenge when 23 out of 24 districts of southern province of Pakistan, Sindh face off with record torrential rains resulting in province worst floods ever.
The devastation affected more than 10 million people and like in any other disaster, being vulnerable children suffered the most. Around 3.5 million children lost protection of their homes, schools and villages.
It is not necessary that we always learn good things from our elders, as children we pick whatever there is in the package.
After the floods of 2011, LHDP/Plan setup child friendly center in this village Khimmiso Khokar. Caregiver ‘Ramzan’ told psycho-social staff about the boys and extra attention was paid to these boys.
My mane is Amjad Ali from village Arbab Allah Dino. To protect ourselves from floods we should build raised homes, second build a protective walls around the village, number three make stronger walls, number four build raised and paved escape ways, number 5 build a safe place like a shelter or a rescue center in the village so that in the hour off need we could take refuge in it.
To understand or explain emergency protective measures is a difficult job. It will be our success to practice what we learn here today. Fresh water stream ‘Shaar-wa’ flows by the left shoulder of our village. Last year’s rains and breaches in this stream caused flooding in our village.”
These boys are my regular students; they are the first ones to come to the school. They keenly study and as they school time ends they go straight to their homes. Their homework has also improved tremendously.
There are various cast living in Jatt Colony, Jatts, Pathans, Mallahs, Kholies and Bheels. Children of all cast used to come to the children friendly center this has also reduced distances and differences among these cast. Children spent time tougher play together and became each other’s friends. On these basis elders of the village also started interacting with each other and they shared their happiness and sorrows.
