The ********************************** is a universal therapeutic infusion catheter for localized delivery of agents to the peripheral vasculature. It is a five lumen catheter consisting of a guide wire lumen, an inflation lumen for the proximal and distal occlusion balloons, an inflation lumen for the space occupying balloon, an inflow lumen and an outflow lumen. A fiber optic pressure sensor is incorporated into the inflow lumen to monitor pressure within the treatment chamber. Radiopaque markers are located on both occlusion balloons to define the treatment chamber.
The catheter is advanced over the guide wire into the area to be treated. The proximal and distal occlusion balloons are inflated, trapping blood within the treatment chamber. The blood is evacuated from the treatment chamber by flushing the chamber with saline. The space occupying balloon is inflated to minimize the quantity of therapeutic agent that is required. The saline is removed by flushing the chamber with the therapeutic agent of choice. The space occupying balloon is partially deflated. Additional therapeutic agent is added to the treatment chamber. The space occupying balloon is re-inflated, pressurizing the chamber, allowing the agent to penetrate into the media, circumferentially and longitudinally. The pressure within the chamber is controlled by constant monitoring of the pressure sensor. The space occupying balloon never touches the vessel wall. When the therapy is completed, the space occupying balloon is deflated and the excess agent is evacuated from the chamber to control systemic effect. The occlusion balloons are deflated, reestablishing blood flow. The OPC is reusable and can be repositioned to treat excessively long lesions or multiple lesions.
