Catherine VO:

I have always told my children that life is meant to be lived and I truly believe that – my husband, Hugh did too.
He was always up for an adventure. Turning down a road we'd never been on – just to see what was there.

I'm much more of a planner. I like to know where I'm going, make a plan and stick to it. He'd tease me. "How do you know we'll ever get the chance to be back here again?" he'd say. And off we'd go.

She laughs lightly and shakes her head.
Then looks down at the photo in her hand, her face a mixture of emotion…she turns serious

His illness was so sudden - unpredictable just like him.

It was overwhelming.

I was grateful that I never had to make any tough medical decisions. We had talked about that, so I knew what he wanted – mostly.

Even with all our conversations, there were still times that I wondered: if I had to make those decisions, would they be the ones Hugh would have chosen?

I watched other families at the hospital struggle with these issues. They had nothing to go on. Medical decisions, money decisions.

It's hard enough to lose someone without second guessing your every move
Lately I've been thinking about those families a lot. I don't want my kids to be in the same predicament.

I know I need to sit down with someone and put together a strategy. I want to know that I will have control of the last phase of my life.

I think that will help me give me the confidence to move forward with my life and enjoy it.

If Hugh were here, he'd say, "It's about time."
