Project Main Details

Casey at the Bat
The project is a radio adaptation of the narrative poem and American Classic, "Casey at the Bat" by Ernest Thayer. It is being produced through the Film/TV department of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. We want the piece to feel more cinematic rather than feeling just like a reading. A sound designer will create the baseball stadium environment and a musician will create an original score. However, we need a narrator whose voice can bring energy and passion to the piece.

As the narrator of "Casey at the Bat," you are the voice of Mudville, a town whose baseball team means the entire world to its people. When you speak, you speak on behalf of everyone in the crowd. You are the Mudville 9's number one fan/sports broadcaster/town spokesman all bundled into one. You're just as invested if not more invested in the action of the story than anybody else out there.

There are no sound effects in this version that I found online, but please click on this link to see a general idea of what we are looking for in terms of a narrator whose story will be accompanied by music. Imagine the sound effects of the stadium, of the crowd, of the game, etc. corresponding with the story and you'll have a very solid idea of the vision of this project. Notice how the narrator gets so emotionally invested in the dramatic moments of the story: **************************************************************

Below the picture, you'll see in orange font "Purchase mp3 recording" with a blue music note next to it. Click on the blue music note. You won't be purchasing anything, but it'll allow you to listen to the track. The pacing of this example will be very much like the pacing of this project.

We will only need one 2.5 hour recording session. Will take place in NYU area. The date for this is flexible, but tentatively looking at recording around 4/23/2012.

An excerpt from "Casey at the Bat":

With a smile of Christian charity great Casey's visage shone;
He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on;
He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the spheroid flew;
But Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said, "Strike two."

"Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered fraud;
But one scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed.
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
And they knew that Casey wouldn't let that ball go by again.

The sneer is gone from Casey's lip, his teeth are clenched in hate;
He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate.
And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey's blow.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville - mighty Casey has struck out.
