Script Details

He was an engineer by training and a highly successful army commander.
“This letter related to a confidential and delicate subject – which I was authorized to broach with Genl. Longstreet – i.e. the advisability of Longstreet taking some active interest in assisting to bring hostilities to a prompt termination – either by his earnestly impressing upon Genl. Lee (with whom he has influence) the great necessity for stopping further bloodshed in a cause which Lee must know has become hopeless and which Longstreet at our interview acknowledged to me, or by any other means which could be used to advantage. In the interview held with Genl. Longstreet by me he evidently was impressed with the truth of my views and indicated his desire and if he could his intention to try and convince Genl. Lee, and through him, Genl. Davis, the Presid. of the Confed. of the great wrong of subjecting the South to further bloodshed – in a struggle that could have but one result. E. O. C. Ord. M. Genl."
