Script Details

The purpose of this film is to show the achievements of the researchers over the last 35 years in fields as diverse as employee involvement to corporate stewardship. The other purpose of the film is to engage sponsor companies. So this film is part documentary, part commercial. 
The Center for Effective Organizations was formed 35 years ago – in 1979; (AN 2) it began as an idea in the head of faculty members from USC’s Organizational Behavior Department (IM: A); and soon, made history, becoming the first university-based research center of its kind. (IM: B).


USC’s Marshall School of Business provided the early start-up support for the Center (IM: C).

Within 2 years, the Center became fully self-sufficient through the support of its early sponsors. (IM: D).

Located at the business school, CEO is a full-time research center that offers educational programs, workshops and seminars to executive leaders.

The support and collaborative research of USC faculty, has helped CEO to become the top-rated university research center for organizational effectiveness. (IM: E + B-ROLL CEO SIGN/OFFICE).

In 1979, the business world looked a lot different from the high-tech, knowledge-based, global organizations we see today. (IM: F)

The US had reached its peak as the world’s leading manufacturer with over 19 million jobs. (IM: G)

The HR function was still being called Personnel Services (IM: H)

And the reality of a laptop, a smartphone, an app or a webinar was still a ways into the future. (IM: I/AN 3)

CEO was a small operation in its early years, with about 5 corporate sponsors. (IM: K )

Each year, they added a number of pioneering researchers, who brought innovative perspectives to the Center’s early research areas (IM: L)

They formed a community of researchers who cared about the issues organizations were facing. (IM: M)

Technology and globalization in the late 80s, early 90s, forced many companies to rethink their design. (IM: A)

The knowledge-based economy quickly outpaced the manufacturing economy, signaling a new era of strategic talent and human capital. (IM B)

To compete with increased performance pressures, more and more companies moved towards team-based work designs. (IM C)

How to organize, lead, motivate and reward those teams were important new areas of research for CEO, who had already been studying “quality circles” and teams on the floors of many high-involvement plants. (IM D/AN 2) (IM E) (Book Photos)

Now, the challenge became how to translate those designs into the new knowledge work environment. (IM F)
