At the turn of the 20th century, the rise of corporate power and robber barons
threatened to hijack the halls of government. It took a courageous Republican Progressive named Theodore Roosevelt to declare that "All contributions by corporations for any political purpose must be forbidden by law." And it remained that way for over a century…
…until the *********************************************************** rolled back the ban. Drowning out the voices of everyday Americans to the tune of $7 billion in election spending, secretly funneled through trade associations and nonprofits. With a single goal in mind, to influence the outcome of elections.
Fueled by this new cash flow, over 3 million negative ads hit the airwaves in 2012, up 81% from the prior election cycle. 60% were negative, and 58% were paid for anonymously.
One path is through regulatory action. To help keep corporations on a clear path, we need consistent regulations at the federal, state and local levels to mandate full disclosure of political spending.
