One of the most brutal, violent, powerful, and ambitious kings to ever walk the earth. Who during his reign constructed a statue made of pure gold that towered over 40 feet tall.
As a symbol of worship and devotion to himself, he instructed people of every tribe and language saying this:
"Every time you hear the horn, the flute, the lyre or the harp, any time a pipe or any other instrument plays music, you must fall down and worship the statue that the King has set up."
And everyone did as it was said…An entire nation on their face bowing in worship to the golden statue of King Nebuchadnezzar.
Everyone except for three young men.
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were mere teenagers who simply refused to bow before anyone other than the one true, living God.
They were taken at once to the ambitious king who questioned them and asked why they would not bow before the idol he had set up.
The King said, furiously,
"If you are ready, when you hear the music, bow and worship the image of gold. But if you do not, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what God will be able to rescue you from my hand."
Filled with faith, and a God given boldness, they responded, "We do not need to answer you or defend ourselves to you. Our God is able to deliver us from the fire and from you. But even if he doesn't we want you to know that we will never serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."
Immediately, the King in all of his wrath, was filled with fury and the expression of his face was turned against them as commanded some of his strongest men to tie them up and throw them into a fiery furnace.
He was so infuriated, in fact, he commanded the furnace be heated 7 times hotter than usual.
The fire was so hot that even the men who carried Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to the flames were engulfed by the fire.
But when the great king looked into the blaze he was astonished.
"Did we not throw three men into the fire?" He asked..his voice beginning to shake...
"Look I see four men walking around in the midst of the fire. And they are all unbound and unharmed by the flames…"
The God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had in fact delivered them from the hand of the vicious king and the three stepped out of the fire as everyone crowded around in disbelief that they were unharmed.
Not a hair on their head was singed, and their clothes didn't even smell of smoke.
Then King Nebuchadzezzar worshipped and said, "Praise to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. There is no other god who can rescue like this...."
