Use: Booker T. Washington Museum, NPS

This is an audition for "Frank Burroughs," who is a white, male with a Virginia twang about 21 years old. It is a dinner conversation of a white family that Booker T Washington would be overhearing as a slave. It takes place in the late 1850s, early 1860s at the dawn of the Civil War.

It would be in an object theater in a museum. Please read FRANK BURROUGHS lines only. Please pronounce lines with correct Virginia twang, keep in mind the tone of the conversation, and the age of your character.

Thank you! We look forward to hearing your record!

Big House Dinner Conversation

RT: 1:30

James Burroughs
Lord, it is hot today! Booker, pull that fan a might harder. Gotta, get these flies out of here.

Sound of fanning begins and continues throughout.

Frank Burroughs
Here, pa. Drink some water.

James Burroughs
Thank you, Frank.

Billy Burroughs
What do we have here, chicken again, Ma?

Mrs. Burroughs
Oh, hush now, Billy… there’s sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, corn, ham, salad, hot biscuits ... If war comes, who knows what kind of food we’ll be able to get!

James Burroughs
Now, that’s enough of that. Eat up. With the grace of God, we won’t go hungry.

The conversation stops for a moment, leaving the sounds of eating and fanning.

James Burroughs (continued)
But war is coming… the North appears bent on that, seems clear enough.

Billy Burroughs
The Yankees want to free all the slaves. So what’s there left to talk about? I’m ready to fight! What about you, Frank?

Frank Burroughs
You bet, Billy. We should be able to decide for ourselves what we want to do. If we want slaves, we should be able to have slaves.

Mrs. Burroughs
I can’t imagine Virginia without our people.

James Burroughs
It would destroy all that we have worked for. Anyway, I don’t know where they’d go… We feed them. We care for them. Where would they go without anyone to look after them?

Mrs. Burroughs
If fighting does start, I just want us all to stay safe. You never know what can happen once the bullets start flying.

James Burroughs
I just heard at over at Holland’s post office that our boys already started firing on the Federals in Fort Sumter in South Carolina.

Billy Burroughs
So it’s started?

James Burroughs
Don’t know, Billy. Could just be another rumor.

Mrs. Burroughs
Enough talk of war. Let’s have some of these ginger-cakes, shall we?

Frank Burroughs
I love ginger-cakes!

Mrs. Burroughs
I know it’s your favorite, Frank.

Billy Burroughs
Me, too. How could anyone not love these?

Sound of fanning begins to slow (as the young Booker T. Washington’s mind turns to the ginger-cakes…)

James Burroughs
Booker, pay attention, don’t slow up on that fanning.

Sound of fanning starts up again and fades out.
