Script Details
Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Population fifteen thousand. Historical home of steelmakers and iron workers. But for one weekend every year, it’s Blobfest.
This small town celebrates its connection to a classic monster movie shot fifty years ago – The Blob.
The movie was about a jelly-like monster from outer space that consumed people. The more it consumed the larger and more threatening it became. Ultimately it was stopped by a teenagers led by Steve McQueen and some fire extinguishers.
Blobfest in Phoenixville, centers around the town’s old movie theater, which starred in the 1958 film and remains much the same today.
The festival celebrates The Blob but also promotes sci-fi related paraphernalia such as tinfoil hats to defeat alien rays.
Kate Philips, one of the writers of The Blob, previously was a movie actress starring in fifty feature films. Her scream became sought after.
It was 1957, Truman was in the White House, Elvis was soon to be drafted, the Cold War was in full effect and atomic testing was underway. No-one knew what the effects of radiation might be. Movies began to feature giant insects, lizards, and alien life-forms. The Blob was the first creature feature in color and in a form never seen before.
Local science-fiction fan Wes Shank has been collecting movie memorabilia for 48 years.
Most of The Blob was shot in Chester County, Pennsylvania with studio locations in rural Chester Springs. The late Shorty Yeaworth directed the movie which was his first venture into science fiction.
Prior to The Blob the Christian film community in Chester Springs produced movies with moral themes promoting Christianity.
The movie starred an unknown actor at the time in the leading role – Steve McQueen. Despite being 27 he played a teenager who saved the day.
In one of the most dramatic scenes in The Blob, the monster oozes into the cinema during a midnight movie, sending movie-goers running screaming from the Colonial Theater. Partial script for audition:
