Script Details

Tone: personable, authentic, as if you were looking someone in the eye and telling them this story with some "authentic, upbeat energy" in your inflections. (not announcery like a typical Bible voiceover would be)

Enunciations for words inside the voiceover:
Babylon (BAB-lh-luhn)
Persia (PER-zhuh)
Yahweh (YAH-weh)
Esther (EHS-ter)
Our reading in the historical books takes a sharp turn in this session. Remember, the Exile was the 70-year period during which the Israelites were forcibly removed from Israel. During the exile, the leadership is different and the kings of Israel are no longer in power, and the kings of Babylon and Persia rule the Israelites. More importantly, the location has changed. Our study of the vast majority of the Old Testament takes place in the land of Israel. However, this story takes place in the heart of the Babylonian and Persian empires. The Israelites were forced to leave the land God had promised them, and watched as their Temple, the center point of Jewish worship, was destroyed. The trauma of being separated from their land cannot be overemphasized. It must have seemed as if everything about their land, culture, and faith had been destroyed.

The key issue that the books of Daniel and Esther explore is maintaining a Jewish identity that is faithful to God even when the surrounding culture works against it. Remember, the Israelites now live in a land where Yahweh is the foreign God. The culture does not support their lifestyle and worship. In fact, many of the powerful leaders do not like them.
