Parlor Scene
Setting: A fiddler plays in the corner as several individuals participate in a contra dance. Most are men, though Charlotte Green and Rosalita (kitchen worker) are visible. Lt. Ewing makes his way towards the billiard table where St. Vrain, Chavez and Charles Bent participate in a game.

William Bent: ‘Ah, Lt. Ewing! Meet Ceran St. Vrain, my business partner, and Antonio Jose Chavez, one of the wealthiest men in Mexico.’

Chavez: ‘Perhaps not for long.’

St. Vrain: ‘What do you mean?’

Chavez: ‘If the U.S. invades New Mexico it will be bad for all of us.’

William Bent: ‘Not necessarily. The army will have to buy supplies.’

St. Vrain: ‘ Don’t worry: we will take care of our Mexican partners, Senor Chavez.

William Bent: Lt. Ewing, this talk must be boring for you. Please, accept my note for one service here at the fort.’

Lt. Ewing: ‘Thank you.’

Chavez: ‘And before you go, do you have any games in that satchel to trade? I have one packet of vermillion left.’

Lt. Ewing: (digging into his bag) ‘Just these playing cards.’

Chavez: ‘Perfect. They will help me make friends on the road.’

St. Vrain: ‘And that’s always good for business!’
