Early 20s female spy posing as domestic worker at 1840s frontier trading post
We see two silhouettes against a battered cabin wall. The shadows don’t tell us much except that one is a woman and one a man, heads close in an urgent, whispered conversation.
Tell this to Padre Martinez when you reach New Mexico. Listen carefully since I dare not write it down. Tell him I arrived safely at the fort and my cousin found me a job at Bent’s Fort that allows me to move about unsuspected. He better be right; they will be harsh if they discover a spy in their midst. Tell Padre Martinez I will satisfy four goals: learn whether the United States plans to invade New Mexico; learn whether the fort is trading guns to the Comanches in New Mexico; secure passage back to Taos with a trading caravan and finally, that I will send the Padre a coded message. Now, be quick! The padre will be very interested to know what these Americanos are up to.
A young New Mexican woman in a colorful cotton dress draws water from a well to pour into a laundry bucket. A Cheyenne warrior leading a horse approaches her.
Yellow Wolf: Ah, you must be the new help that has arrived from Taos.
Tafoya: You know of Taos?
Yellow Wolf: Of course. It’s only across the river. Imagine….the Fort, the U.S. territories, the Cheyenne homelands….all so close to Mexico.
Tafoya: As Mexico is well aware. Are you new here, too?
Yellow Wolf: (chuckling) Hardly. The Bents are family; they run the Fort. Also, William Bent is married to a member of my tribe.
Tafoya: Es verdad? What is your tribe?
Yellow Wolf: We are Tsis-tsis-tsas. Cheyenne people. I am Chief Yellow Wolf. I trade here all the time.
Josefa Tafoya: The Cheyennes! - great hunters and skilled horseman. These Americans are fortunate to have you for their allies…will you fight for them, if – as some have said – there is a war with Mexico?
Yellow Wolf: Ha, you are very curious aren’t you? I can’t speak for all the Cheyennes. But no, we’ll let the white men fight their own wars. The Cheyenne people have their own troubles.
Tafoya: I am Josefa Tafoya and I am very happy to meet you, Yellow Wolf. May I ask you a question?
