Project Main Details
This audition is for the "Introductory Video" which describes the early history of the Navy Yard and Wallabout Bay, the East River site on which the yard was built.
We are looking for a husky, self assured voice that can give a passionate reading about an iconic place in Brooklyn and United States' history. Possibly a tinge of Brooklyn accent, but really, just a hint.

It’s a place where early American workers powered an industry that would dominate an era…
And helped transform U.S. military might in the nick of time.
Where the hopes of a nation went out to sea…
And a burgeoning borough – and a new nation – faced a brutal test… before beginning an extraordinary ascent.
(EFFECT OF CANNON FIRE)
In 1776, when the Colonies declared independence from Britain and with Revolutionary zeal spreading like wildfire, British troops descended on New York Harbor… mooring enormous ships here in Wallabout Bay to imprison Americans.
Some 12-thousand souls perished aboard these rat-infested hulks.
But among the survivors was a young sailor who embodied the "can do" spirit of the Yard.
James Forten was serving on a ship that hunted British merchant vessels for their cargo. After it was captured, Forten was thrown onto the most notorious of the prison ships, the Jersey.
He might have been sold into slavery, like other black prisoners... but a game of marbles with the captain’s son secured his future.
The captain offered to send him to England for an education, but Forten fervently said no:
"I am here a prisoner for the liberties of my country. I never, never, shall prove a traitor to her interests!"
