Please audition for the part of Emily  
Narrator: Every year, hiring managers spend approximately 18,500 hours interviewing job candidates at **************. As one of those hiring managers, how do you ensure that the time you spend interviewing is productive in gathering the information needed to make a high quality hiring decision? The answer: Structured Behavioral-based Interviewing.

Meet Ryan. Ryan has been a front-line manager for about a year. He hasn’t had to hire anyone until now.

Meet Emily. Emily is a Recruiter from HR. Part of her job is to coach managers on proper interviewing techniques. Ryan, wisely, decides to ask Emily for help.

Ryan: Emily, I need your help. I looked at the candidate resumes you sent over. They’re all scheduled for interviews next week and I want to make sure I don’t waste a lot of time in the interviews asking the wrong questions. I want to get the information I need out of the interviews to make a good choice.

Emily: No problem. I can show you the tools that are available online. You’ve got a good foundation from the Selection at ******************** online program you completed and the BCS selection module, so you shouldn’t have any problems. You remember the 4-step approach to selection?

Ryan: Sure, I understand that all the upfront work has been done to define what successful performance looks like for the job. I’m just not sure about doing step 3 and what this behavioral-based interviewing stuff is all about.

Emily: Oh, it’s easy. You’ll get the hang of it in no time. By the time we’re finished, you will be able to:

• describe the structured behavioral-based interviewing style and why you should use it;
• use an interview guide to help capture relevant candidate information;
• and manage the interview to minimize any disruptions and maximize your data collection.

Let’s listen to an overview of what it’s all about and how to prepare for the interview, and then I’ll help you with the trickier parts of the interview itself.

Narrator: Structured behavior-based interviewing involves asking all candidates similar open-ended questions, seeking details on situations, [Pause] actions [Pause] and results. It's based on the premise that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior.
