You know, Kyle and Richard are right. Lift safety is a priority. Hi, I'm Rich Morrello. I've been lifting vehicles for over 30 years. I don’t know about you, but if I’m working with equipment that has the power to crush me, I want to make sure I know what I’m doing.
Think about it. Every other lifting device from cranes and forklifts to elevators and scissor lifts prohibits you from standing below the lifted load -- for your safety! But our job depends on us working underneath a lifted load. So we’d better get it right.
And I guarantee that whether you've been lifting vehicles as long as I have or you're just starting out, you could be working more safely under your lift than you are right now.
[Sample story/scenario script -- in a different/character voice]:
I had just finished working on a sedan. The diagnostics had taken forever and I’d had to run over to parts a few times while making the repairs. I was way over the book rate and there were a bunch of cars waiting. I was trying to move as fast as I could. I raised the car and released the latches. Then I jammed the lift lowering valve handle with a bungee cord so I could get in a quick bathroom break while the car lowered.
Well, right as I got to the bathroom, I heard this loud crashing sound. I ran back to the shop floor and saw the car lying on its side. That’s when I realized I hadn’t moved the rolling oil drain out of the way. The car had hit it on the way down and just tipped right over. I’m lucky I had worked at the shop so long and had a good reputation or I know I would’ve been fired for sure.
