Script Details

NARRATOR: It chanced on one of these rambles that their way led them down a by-street in a busy quarter of London. In one of its crowded and noisy streets, there was a certain sinister block of building. It was two stories high; showed no window; nothing but a door and a blind forehead of discoloured wall and bore, in every feature, the marks of prolonged and sordid negligence.

NARRATOR: When they came abreast of the entry, Enfield lifted up his cane and pointed at it.

ENFIELD: Utterson, did you ever remark that door?

UTTERSON: Yes, a lot of times.

ENFIELD: It is connected in my mind with a very odd story.

UTTERSON: Indeed? And what was that?

ENFIELD: Well it was this way: About two month’s ago I was going home at about three o’clock in the morning, when I saw two figures: one was a little man who was stumping along and the other was a girl of maybe eight or ten who was running down a cross-street. Well, sir, the two ran into one another at the corner, and the girl fell down; and then the man began to trample over the child’s body and leaving her screaming on the ground, went away. It was hellish to see. I gave a view-halloa, took to my heels, collared my man, and brought him back to the place. There was already quite a group of people around the screaming child. He was perfectly cool and made no resistance, but gave me one look, so ugly that it brought out the sweat on me like running.

ENFIELD: The people who had turned out were the girl’s own family; and pretty soon, a doctor put in his appearance. Well, according to the Sawbones, the child got some bruises and was rather frightened. Then we told the man we could and would make a huge scandal out of this if he did not compensate the girl and her family for the outrage.
