Script Details

She is a linguist who speaks with a light to moderate Russian accent.
In her russian accent she said, “This written language is definitely based on a phonetic alphabet. Words are constructed by a small group of letters that represent sounds. Rather than, for example, Japanese, where each word has its own symbol.”

“How can you be sure,” asked Chris.

She looked at her notes and said, “Because I’ve only counted 23 unique symbols so far. If it weren’t phonetic, there would be a lot more.”

Chris asked her hopeful, “Is there much chance you can translate it?”

She replied, “Well, I can actually begin to make sense of some of the words just by trying to judge the context they are used in. I can also take some of those books you showed me and scan them into the computer and do an analysis of the word counts. Some words are used more commonly than others in nearly every language. Over time, I believe it would be possible to translate most of what we see here, but we still won’t have any idea how to pronounce any of it unless we can find some audio samples of the language. Still, it will take time.”
