There is more to communication than speaking, listening and understanding. Kougl (1997) defines interpersonal communication as “a dynamic process of interaction between people in which they assign meaning to each other’s verbal and non-verbal behavior.” When we assign meaning to what someone is communicating to us, we are making assumptions. This can result in misinterpretation and miscommunication.
To be an effective communicator, we must know how to assert ourselves in certain situations, how to confront conflict, and how to adapt our choice of speech and behavior in different settings and with different people. We communicate differently depending on the groups in which we’re involved. Our interactions may change if we’re communicating with strangers, with people we know, with people who are a different gender or race, etc. You’re probably already aware of some of the ways you communicate differently when you consider how you would speak to a professor versus how you would speak to a close friend. You may respect both people, but the language and level of formality you use might be quite different.
