Script Details

***custom demo required***
Pennsylvania produces more than 20 commercial varieties of apples. These apples are harvested throughout the season -- from the first Ginger Gold in late summer -- to the very last Pink Lady in mid-November.
Each apple is picked at its prime, determined by a series of tests to ensure optimal ripeness.
Apple maturity can be determined by a pressure test, which uses a penetrometer to measure the apple’s firmness.
A starch-iodine test may be used to assess the apple’s conversion of starch to sugar. Here, iodine is applied to react with the starch; more mature apples will see little or no discoloration.
When apples are at their peak, they are hand-picked by a skilled, seasonal workforce specially trained to ensure each apple reaches the packing house in the same condition it was found on the tree.
Working from a ladder, pickers carefully remove each apple from its branch without bruising and with the stem intact. This prevents decay of the fruit.
Apples are placed in the picker’s bag, and then transferred to a large bin. A full bin contains 25 bushel – or one-thousand pounds – of apples.
Full bins are collected by forklift and carried to the loading area.
Once picked and loaded, fresh market varieties are sent to a packing house or directly to local farm markets. Apples intended for applesauce, apple cider and other products are shipped to a processing plant.
