I was driving down the street and the car in front of me stopped short. I swerved to avoid hitting it and next thing I know, the guy in the car next to me is making a fist at me. Then, on top of it all, my girlfriend who was in the passenger’s seat, criticized my driving. That is when I began to get upset.
B. What were some of the things you said to yourself about the situation?
I thought to myself, she isn’t driving. What does she know? Back seat driver. I’d like to see her do any better. I hope the guy next to me isn’t going to get road rage. Why did that dumb jerk in front of me stop short anyways? What an idiot.
C. How did you feel physically and mentally as a result of this?
Physically, my heart started to beat fast. I felt tense in my neck and my stomach tightened up. Mentally, I felt angry at the other two drivers and my girlfriend. I was anxious because I nearly crashed and I was worried the other driver who shook his fist at me might explode. I also felt and unsupported by my girlfriend who criticized my driving.
D. What key phrases did you use (or can you use) from the AFA Key Phrases list to help you through the situation?
Well, first of all, I started to think of the AFA key phrases to see which ones would apply. Then, I allowed myself to have the natural response of fear and anger. Anyone in my shoes would feel the same way. I realized that the situation was upsetting, but not fatal. I remembered that not everyone is going to see the world in the same way and realized that this was a brief moment. I knew I would get over it and feel better soon. It definitely wasn’t worth losing my peace of mind over.
E. What would you have done in the past before learning the AFA Method?
I would have argued with my girlfriend and yelled at her, while speeding up to catch the guy who made a fist at me. I would have been tailgating him and blowing my horn at him. I would have let the tense feeling in my neck and stomach get worse and I might have gotten a headache or had stomach problems later on.
F. When you are using this method in an online meeting or on the discussion forum, other members of the group will now have an opportunity to comment, using the specific AFA Key Phrases.

A. Think of a brief example about a specific situation and describe what happened, up to the point when you started to get upset.
I was at the supermarket waiting on line when I noticed a very scary looking man in front of me. He smelled and looked dirty and next thing I know, he started to argue with the cashier and raised his voice loudly wanting to see the manager. That is when I began to get upset.
B. What were some of the things you said to yourself about the situation?
I thought, Oh my God, is this man gonna go postal? He’s freaking me out. What is so angry about? This reminds me of when my father used to yell at my older sister. I want to run and hide. I’m gonna have a nervous breakdown.
C. How did you feel physically and mentally as a result of this?
Physically my palms started to sweat and my whole body shrunk. I noticed that my breathing got really shallow and that my jaw got tight. I also felt dizzy. Mentally, I was anxious, scared, and a little angry, but mostly frightened.
D. What key phrases did you use (or can you use) from the AFA Key Phrases list to help you through the situation?
I remembered what I had learned from my AFA training and in the online AFA meeting and then I told myself it was minor compared to my sanity. I also remembered that I could get away from an irritating event if I wanted to. I breathed deeply, calmed myself down and switched lines to get as far away from the man as I could. I reminded myself that I can only control my inner self and not the outer world.
As I was driving home, I started to laugh to myself about how silly the situation really was and used humor and comedy to make myself feel better.
E. What would you have done in the past before learning the AFA Method?
Before learning the AFA method, I might have left the store without my groceries, gone home, cried about how dysfunctional I was and hyperventilated until I made myself sick. I would have cried on the phone to my friends about how crazy I was and how I can’t cope with the world. I would have focused on how much the man reminded me of my violent father and would have possibly eaten a half gallon of ice cream which would have made me feel even worse afterwards.
