As life science researchers, we are used to pushing the boundaries. But we are going to tell you something you may not know about life scientists. Something that we learned while researching, well…you. And this learning has the potential to improve not only your individual research but your research teams.

As we begin our careers, we learn theory and technologies, then begin to apply these. By the end of graduate school, if you include post-docs, most of us would have likely worked in four labs.
However, when did we learn about working with other scientists or in teams? How about managing a research lab?

The challenge is that most of our non-technical skills come from the few labs we work in and experience… But how did those research leaders learn? The same way- from the few labs they worked in... And those leaders learned the same way…
Essentially, in a highly technical field, we are interacting and managing our research using tribal knowledge. While it may be comfortable, it certainly isn’t scientific.

What are myths and what stands the test of scrutiny? Are there practices the top research teams perform that the rest can learn from? Are micromanaging scientists more successful? We had many hypotheses to test. To begin, we assessed members from over 500 life science research teams from North America and Europe.
To find out one popular myth that was busted, click to continue.
