General anaesthetic medications act reversibly on the central nervous system (CNS) to bring about immobility despite noxious stimulation and amnesia.
Over the past 150 years, there have been many attempts to define general anaesthesia, on the basis of a number of often difficult to define or difficult to measure variables.
These variables include: amnesia, analgesia, consciousness, mobility, haemodynamic variables, reflexes and response to noxious stimuli.
The theoretical ideal anaesthetic would be easy to deliver, have no perioperative side effects and have a low blood:gas solubility, allowing rapid equilibration between delivered concentration and effect site.1,2 In turn, this would allow rapid induction and recovery and easy titration of dose to desired effect during maintenance.2
An anaesthetic with the characteristics listed would:
Be easy to administer
Be quick acting
Be haemodynamically stable
Allow rapid recovery
Be easy to titrate
Have no side effects
