“Anything else?”
“I cannot sleep more than four hours at a time. I have
diffi culty sitting still sometimes.”

The oncologist seemed satisfi ed up to this point, but my
failure with the serial sevens was unacceptable to me. My
resolve was to practice serial sixes, sevens, eights and nines.
Overall, I thought the exam was going well up to that
point, especially since I had no clue as to what to expect.
The presence of Kathy, Mom and David in the room calmed
the butterfl ies in my stomach.
I didn’t see any reason to be anxious about this fi rst
meeting. Everything had gone so well—surgery, quick
release from the hospital, a week of rest, stitch removal, all
going according to plan.

Expect The Tumor To Return

Familiar faces provided the rebar to hold my mind
together in view of my grossly amateurish approach to all
things medical up to this point. It was as though three angels
were literally to my right, speaking no words (except for
MAP), but sending waves of hope and encouragement my
way. Then a statement destroyed my repose.
“So you had surgery and an MRI shortly thereafter?”
the oncologist said.
“Yes, I had a clean scan two days after surgery.”
“Well, you should expect the tumor to return and take
your life.”
What? What is wrong with you, Dr. Kill Joy? Have you
no heart? Should I just go home and die? Have you all
knowledge and zero feeling?
