To reduce this risk, the Army developed Precision Munitions, a highly accurate alternative to conventional rounds.
With a CEP of 10 meters or less, a single Precision round has the destructive effect that once required multiple volleys from a full Battery… and poses a lot less risk to friendly forces and non-combatants.
But as accurate as they are, even Precision Munitions can’t answer every need. Issues of range, airspace, cost and payload can limit their usefulness.
Now… there’s another option a middle-ground between conventional rounds and precision munitions. It’s called Near-Precision Artillery- conventional rounds that are modified so that first round effects are achievable with every fire mission.
