Host: Hello everyone and welcome to ¡§SmartCast . . . Any time, Any Place.¡¨ I am your host John Nickel from Personal Insurance Training. With each SmartCast, we bring you information and ideas to help you grow as a Travelers Sales Executive and build your sales results. In today¡¦s session, we¡¦re going to focus on the successful Lunch & Learn Programs sponsored by Distribution Development and Effectiveness. Joining me is Krista Yankowski, Manager in Distribution Development and Effectiveness.

Krista: Hello everyone and I am glad to be here!

Host: Krista will answer many of the common questions the Field has about the Lunch & Learn programs, share best practices, and provide practical advice to help you prepare your upcoming agency Lunch & Learns.

Krista: I sure will! I will also reveal my ¡§insider knowledge¡¨ and make sure that each of your Learn & Learns is successful for not only you but your agency. In other words, help you become your agent¡¦s Trusted Advisor.

Host: Wow ¡K This sounds exciting! Let¡¦s get started, shall we?

Krista: Absolutely!

Host: Krista, begin telling us a little about Travelers¡¦ Philosophy behind the Lunch & Learn Programs.

Krista: Experience has shown us that when growth goals are achieved by simply moving existing business, the results are often short-lived. That¡¦s why we work with our independent agents in a spirit of genuine partnership to help them expand their entire book of business ¡V not just Travelers¡¦ portion of it. We know that if we help the agent grow their business, then we will grow as well.

Host: So how exactly do the Lunch & Learn programs help our agent¡¦s grow their business?

Krista: Well, first, we have to be sure we are targeting agencies that are committed to growing with Travelers and have capacity to write more business, in other words, staff to support quoting/writing/servicing new business.

Krista: Once we have our targeted agencies, we can deliver any or all of the Lunch & Learn programs. These programs are specifically designed to improve retention and improve agency¡¦s long-term profitable growth. Overall, the content in Lunch & Learns help Personal Insurance Sales Producers and Customer Service Representatives across the country improve their approach to selling and servicing their clients.

Host: Sounds simple enough ¡K We first target committed agencies with capacity and then deliver the programs?

Krista: Well you may want to look at other factors such as, are some areas in your territory more competitively priced than others, or depending on your specific goals, are you looking to grow one particular area, you know, things like that. And of course, we have to be sure that the offer the right Lunch & Learns based on the agency¡¦s needs and that we prepare prior to delivering the program.

Host: What do you mean by offering the right Lunch & Learn?

Krista: We all know that agencies have different needs. We know this through our Agency Diagnostics (PIKS survey, Top Down Bottom Up, FTE), the environment or area of the country we are in, regional initiatives, etc. So, Agency Development has specifically created a variety of Lunch & Learns based on ¡§where¡¨ the agent is. For example:
„X You are working with a newly appointed agency. You want to get to know them and they need to get to know us. The Travelers Story is the perfect solution. It sets the stage for future lunch and learns, and also explains Travelers philosophy of Helping Agents Grow through a number of different examples.
„X Or let¡¦s say you use the Agency Management Tutorials and validate that the agency has 30% of their clients rounded within the agency. There is a lot of opportunity there. But their CSR¡¦s may need a little training before an all out campaign is launched. . The Account Rounding module illustrates the importance of account rounding clients and teaches how to ask for the sale.

Host: Exactly how many Lunch & Learns are there?

Krista: There are currently 8 sessions, but we are adding to that number.

Host: So, let me summarize. Lunch & Learns help us help our agents grow. We need to be sure we are targeting agencies with capacity and commitment and that we align the right Lunch & Learn with the agency¡¦s needs.

Krista: You got it!

Host: Terrific! Let¡¦s take a quick commercial break and give our listeners a chance to digest this great information!

Host: Welcome back! Again, we are talking with Krista Yankowski in Distribution Development and Effectiveness. She is answering our questions about the Lunch & Learn programs. Krista, at the beginning of the session you mentioned you would reveal to us your ¡¨insider¡¨ knowledge so that we could be sure our Lunch & Learns will be successful.

Krista: Is it that time already?

Host: Yes it is and I am sure all of our listeners are on the edge of their seats!

Krista: I have facilitated many of these sessions and have helped dozens of Sales Executives on their sessions and the secret to success is preparation.

Host: Preparation, how so?

Krista: Well, to begin, we have created detailed facilitator guides, participant guides and hand outs for each topic. The idea is to have Sales Executives work with their agents on a local level and deliver a session in about one hour over lunch.

Host: One hour! That doesn¡¦t seem like a lot of time. I can see why preparation is important.

Krista: Absolutely. Like I mentioned the detailed facilitator guides walk you through the program and preparation begins with reading through these materials. Plus, the facilitator guide provides helpful hints on making the session interactive and educational along with activities you might want to skip in order to save time. Finally, the facilitator guide allows you to add your own experience to the session. We don¡¦t want to script these sessions out verbatim ¡K you add your own flavor and context. This is what makes it real for the agency!

Host: Since preparation is so critical, do you have any suggestions on how I should go about planning my first Lunch & Learn?

Krista: All of the guides can be found electronically on the FSRC, it takes a few days when you order the materials through Alphagraphics, so in the meantime, download the electronic versions and familiarize yourself with those.

Host: What other tips or suggestions have you heard from Sales Executives running the Lunch & Learns?

Krista: Well many of our Sales Executives have great relationships with their agents. What I find some SE¡¦s doing is picking one agency they feel comfortable with and trying it out with them first.

Host: The newer modules seem a lot longer than earlier editions. Any tips on fitting all of that information into a one hour module?

Krista: The facilitators guide really serves as a template for your session, just as you can add pieces in, you can certainly take them out, based on your audience. For example, if there are 5 activities in a session, maybe you will only want to do 2, and do the remaining activities later on as a follow up.

Host: Krista, are you hearing any feedback from agencies that have participated in the Lunch & Learns?

Krista: We have received an overwhelming positive response from the field. How much time do we have left?

Host: Wow! That much great feedback?

Krista: Let me share a few comments:
„X One participant from the Social Styles Lunch & Learn said, ¡§Puts everything in a different perspective when dealing with clients. It makes you ¡§think¡¨ a little more.¡¨
„X Another mentioned, ¡§Although I prefer to get to the point with my clients, I have made more of an effort to ¡¥chitchat¡¦ with my amiable clients.

Host: It seems Lunch & Learns really do ¡§talk the talk and walk the walk!¡¨ Ultimately, we¡¦re living up to our reputation as Trusted Advisors. What¡¦s next on the horizon for the Lunch & Learn Programs?

Krista: We are currently working on a ¡¥Marketing with Claims¡¦ session to help our agents grow their business through a systematic claims process.

Host: So we can definitely count on more Lunch & Learns in 2009. What final thoughts can you leave us with?

Krista: My team has done lunch and learn training for regions at their respective meetings, if anyone is interested, please contact me so we can compare calendars.
