In my Texas classroom, I have the awesome responsibility--and distinct pleasure--of making sure our 8th-grade students know how our system of justice works. You know why I take it so seriously? Because these kids are the future, and they are the ones who are going to keep our system working, and even make it better. I want them to feel confident every day when they wake up that the law works a certain way EVERY time, the same for the richest or the simplest person. We’re all equally accountable to the law, and nobody is above the law. And furthermore, because we've engineered this predictability and accountability within the system, you can look up the precedent for a case in a law book. It's all there. I like to send my students right to the source–so they see it with their own eyes.
