THEY WEREN’T JUST PLAYING GAMES.
THEY REINED UPON DIVISION STREET
TIED THERE HORSES TO THE RAIL
THEY’D CAREFULLY CASED THE BANK AND TOWN
THEY FIGURED THEY COULDN’T FAIL.
THEN TWO MORE YOUNGERS, COLE AND JIM
JOINED THEM IN THE STREET.
THEN BILL CHADWELL, CLELL MILLER AND FRANK JAMES
MADE THE FEARSOME GANG COMPLETE.
BUT BEFORE TOO LONG THINGS WENT ALL WRONG
THE TOWN FOLKS TOOK TO SHOOTIN’
AND THEY ALL TOOK HITS ‘CEPT CHARLIE PITTS
AND THEY GAVE UP ON THEIR LOOTIN’.
CHADWELL AND MILLER LAY DEAD IN THE STREET
AND TWO NORTHFIELD MEN ALSO DIED
AND SIX MEN LEFT NEAR SHOT TO DEATH
SO BAD HURT THEY COULD SCARCELY RIDE.
FOR 14 DAYS THEY FOUGHT THEIR WAY
HUNGRY WET AND COLD
TILL ON SEPTEMBER 21 PITTS FINAL TALE WAS TOLD.
HE STAYED TRUE TO HIS FRIENDS TO THE VERY END
AND THEY KNEW THAT’S WHAT HE WOULD DO
AND IT TOOK FIVE HITS TO KILL CHARLIE PITTS
