Once received, the Representative’s order enters the warehouse management system.
The software tracks inventory as it is received, but more importantly it also tracks it when it is taken out of the warehouse and placed in the picking stations so it is easily located.
The software also directs cartonization, which designates that products be segregated into cartons in a logical fashion. Like products and / or complementary products can be packed together. The software also ensures that cartons are not overfilled.
Here’s how the process works: Order fillers are provided a packing list that tells them exactly what is supposed to be in each box.
On that packing list is the master bar code that essentially tells them all of the Representative data and the order data. That bar code is then used in the order start functions. The system directs where that package needs to go throughout the floor to get fulfilled.
The typical order can be completely filled and at the loading dock in approximately 54 minutes – as opposed to an hour and 45 minutes at a branch location.
The literature is the first item that is placed in the box. Because it’s at the bottom of the box it’s protected from the other products as they are put into the carton.
After the literature area, the carton goes through a series of mechanical assembly dispensing machines.
The heavier products are dispensed on top of the paperwork.
After it goes through the durable dispensing machine, the carton, with the literature on the bottom and the heavier items already in it, will now go through the delicate mechanical assembly machine.
With approximately 2600 items dispensed here, 30% of the order will come from this area.
We have the ability to take small and delicate items and bag them separately so they’re easier for the Representative to find and catalog upon delivery.
Products that don’t lend themselves to automatic dispensing and have to be manually picked are dispensed in areas we call station lighting.
As the orders come into the stations the bar code will trigger the lights. As the operator pushes the button, the light will go out but the number will stay so they know they need to pick 1 or 2 or more items. Then a green light comes up and that signals that everything has been picked.
The station lighting ensures accuracy.
Error correction detects when the items did not dispense properly from the mechanical assembly.
If there is a known exception in the system, rather than it going out the door, it’s flagged by the system and is 100% inspected. Bar codes ensure that everything is correct.
The order is also checked through weight measurement. The calculated weight of the order is measured against the actual scale weight. If there is a variance the order is inspected to uncover why that variance occurred.
The cardboard cartons currently being used are much stronger and have a better chance of withstanding transit, particularly through UPS’s system.
The cartons are sent onto waiting trucks and soon will be in the hands of the Representatives.
Everyone at the Zanesville facility is proud to work for Avon Products and dedicated to servicing all of you – the heart of Avon: the Representatives!
And speaking of representatives, let’s hear what a few of you think of the products distribution from the Zanesville facility!
