I developed ulcers on my feet and I went to see many doctors but no one diagnosed it exactly. I was advised to go to Laugdah hospital where I was diagnosed with leprosy.
When I heard I started to cry. I was thinking about community stigma. I was very stressed and I was wondering how would I support my children.
The community told me I had to leave the village and I did not know where I would go. Then my wife also said I had to leave the house. My heart was broken because we were together for a long time, we were loving together, and enjoying life but suddenly because of the leprosy it was ruined. I ended up alone with a broken heart and I wanted to kill myself.
Laugdah staff gave me counseling and motivated me that I will be OK if I do self-care properly. I joined a self-care group and I learned to take responsibility of my health and to give services and to advise others as well.
Laugdah staff met with the community people and taught leprosy awareness. They informed my family that leprosy is not contagious if the person is taking the medication. I started to a change in my family’s behavior.
My life is changed now. I became a leader of the self help group. I am fully involved in income generating activities, overseeing savings accounts, and giving group members loans to start small businesses. We contribute to the community and help by building bridges and with other projects.
Now, people with leprosy symptoms contact me or if I hear about someone with symptoms our group makes sure they are diagnosed early and that they get help. And Laugdah is always there, supporting me.
Everything is wonderful now. My wife and I are happy together. Community people respect me and are good to me. We eat together and they involve me in village meetings. Now, there is no stigma in our community.
I am very happy that Laugdah saved my life and that Laugdah is saving the lives of others.
