Project Main Details
“Just as always, Sarah opens her eyes to the warm sun rays, peering through the cracks in the walls of her family’s shelter. She rubs her eyes, stretches her body and rises up to get out onto the footpath leading to the busy streets of Manila. As she steps out, without a murmur, not knowing when, where and what will be her breakfast, she grabs hold of an empty bag and heads off to face another day full of uncertainties.
As her first target, Sarah rushes to the nearest dump-site where she finds something to eat and a few plastic bottles that she can sell for a little money. For the rest of the day, Sarah roams around the streets looking for disposed off materials which could be salvaged for cash.
After spending hours on the streets, hungry, thirsty and tired, Sarah begs for food to keep her self going. On her way home Sarah stops to rest, her mind brings back flashes of scenes she witnessed through out the day specifically children in beautiful uniforms laughing and playing at school.
With these images flashing back and forth in her mind, Sarah, feeling left out, makes her way back to her family shelter to retire for the day and regain energy for the harsh realities of the next.
Part 3: Statistics
Sarah is one out of 13 Million or more Filipino kids who live below poverty line. Over 200,000 children live on the streets in 65 cities and towns across the Philippines. The number of children living on the streets may be even higher with increasing number of families moving from rural areas to Manila in anticipation of a better life but end up being homeless. Faced with the harsh realities, many parents drift apart leaving children alone and deprived of basic rights such as school and having a normal childhood.
Inflation and the rising cost of education in the country is making it difficult for millions of children to go to school. Although the poor are exempt from school fees, the unaffordable costs of books, transportation, canteen fees, uniforms, shoes and other goods and services makes it impossible for these kids to realize their dreams.
ABC Children’s Aid believes and has proven that these children, if provided the right opportunities, can be teachers, doctors, journalists, engineers and politicians of future. ABC Children’s Aid also believes that education is the way out of these appalling conditions as it equips individuals with tools to break the cycle of deprivation and poverty.
Part 4: About ABC

Currently ABC Children’s Aid is operating several pre-schools, elementary schools, and high schools in different parts of the Philippines. ABC also runs a facility for street children that provides informal education and caters to various needs of the children with a vision to help them integrate into the normal way of life.
