This new gateway to the *** campus is truly contemporary in appearance and embodies the spirit of fitness and motion in its innovative “stretch and bend” massing concept. Said one judge of the project’s interior, “The use of wood ceilings in the natatorium, gymnasium and fitness areas adds warmth often missing from collegiate projects.”

More than one judge remarked that this renovated facility serves as an unmistakable reflection of its community. The exterior exudes strength in the form of locally grown and manufactured Douglas fir, which surrounds the building in support of its signature roof. The facility, as one judge aptly stated, “feels like Banff.”

“Beautiful project with great organization,” remarked one judge of this recreation center renovation. Designed to coexist with a landmark football stadium, the building’s three primary components — a field house, an aquatics center and a gymnasium — respond to Commonwealth Stadium’s scale and dynamic nature.

Judges agreed that this project exemplifies understated elegance inside and out.
The building’s exterior greets visitors with separate and distinctive walls of glass, providing visual connection to both interior activity and adjacent green spaces. “Very well done,” said one panelist. “Clean and simple.”

Doing more with less has become a common design mantra, but nowhere is that more evident than in this New England gem. Remarked one judge, “Keene YMCA is a wonderful example of how commercial building systems can be utilized with pre-engineered systems to provide communities with cost-effective program space.”

Designers took a modest and utilitarian approach to this community center, an effect not lost on our judges. From the stark and simple interior to an exterior that mimicked the nearby glacial outcroppings, this facility, proclaimed one panelist was a “brutal, simple, powerful architecture expression on a brutal and powerful site.”

A building’s relationship to its site has long been among the Facilities of Merit judging criteria, and none of this year’s projects captured judges’ attention in this respect more so than Oak Ridges Community Centre. Said one judge, “The way it is nestled into the hill gives the building such a thoughtful presence in the landscape.”

Renovating and rebranding an iconic athletic facility is always daunting, but judges agreed the task was ably handled in this case. Architects overcame site limitations to create a modern facility and significantly improved the fan experience without sacrificing the facility’s legendary nature. Stated one judge, “A masterful makeover of a revered building.”

From its sculptural park pavilion presence to its clean and simple interiors, there was nothing the judges didn’t admire about this aquatic center, including such signature elements as a wood ceiling over the main pool. “Stunning urban park building,” said one judge, describing it as “Simplicity in plan, sophisticated in massing, detailing and execution.”

Respect for the original State Gym was central to this expansion of ********************************************** and the finished project in turn earned the judges’ respect. Said one judge, “The exceptional scale, rhythm and simple use of materials equates to a strong edge at Sheldon Avenue.”
