Week7
The first paragraph of your paper should include these 3 items:
an introduction,
a thesis statement,
and a preview of main points.
The 3 items should be written in present tense. The introduction needs to be a brief but interesting and unique statement to catch the reader’s attention. And of course, the introduction should be related to the topic of the paper. In this example, the introduction is:
An ethnographic inquiry conducted and researched methodically promotes understanding of culture. However, if the narrative presentation lacks creativity and interest the entire project is vulnerable to misinterpretation. This duality in representation is a critical component in accessing what qualifies as rich textual content. An effective ethnographer is a storyteller and a scientist.
The second item is thesis statement. This statement provides the central idea of the paper and it is aligned with the main points of the paper. Please make this statement very succinct. In this example, the thesis statement is this sentence:
The purpose of this paper is to review the literature in three seminal texts and one journal article regarding ethnographic writing.
The third item is the preview of main points. Three to five main points are usually appropriate for a short paper.
There are 3 main points in this sample paper. First, examine the subjective role of the researcher, second, describe literature on the development of rich textual content, and third, investigate ideas for synthesizing thematic narratives within the boundaries of academic prose.
The rest of your paper should elaborate on each main point. One main point of this sample paper is the subjective role of the researcher.
To elaborate on this point, the author included research to support his claim and used correct in-text APA citations.
Before you move on to another topic, it is wise of you to add a transition sentence to let the reader know you are done talking about the topic and that you are ready to move on to the next topic.
The transition sentence between Main Point 1 and Main Point 2 in this sample paper is developing a relationship with the reader, as audience by using controlled literary devices in the writing of textual content is the next topic to explore.
Your paper should end with a conclusion paragraph. Your conclusion should briefly summarize the main points. Also, you should tie the conclusion to your introduction to provide the reader with a sense of closure. In this example, the conclusion paragraph is:
Writing ethnography and addressing real world problems of culture requires the researcher to tell a good story to scholars with authority, while maintaining the integrity of the culture under consideration. In this paper, I examined the subjective role of the researcher, described literature on the development of rich textual content and I investigated ideas for synthesizing thematic narratives within the boundaries of academic prose.
Lastly, include your reference page. You need to include in this page only those resources that you actually read and were not cited in someone else’s research. Do not include any internet resources, unless approved by your course facilitator.
