Employee: (sighs, mumbling, “like I really have time for this”, ad libs).
Show TimeSheet screen.
Employee: Oh, maaaaaan.”
[SFX: PING!] Bad Angel appears, bottom left.
Bad Angel: This is ridiculous! Look, Saturday and Sunday too! What is this, some kind of electronic punch card? You a factory worker now? I say pretend you didn’t read the story, didn’t get the email, play dumb, maybe they’ll just drop the whole thing.
[SFX: PING!] Bad Angel vanishes, Good Angel appears, top right.
Good Angel: I’m so proud of you! You’re a great player, on a great team, in a great firm! Now, we need all the players, on all the teams, to chip in, by doing this one extra thing, to help the Firm do even better!
Employee: (doubtfully) By everyone filling out timesheets?
Good Angel: Yes. By EVERYONE filling out time sheets. It’s not about any ONE person, it’s about us as a group. You have your job, how you do it is between you and your manager. But you spread your time across these various functions to get it done. …
As Good Angel speaks, the Employee’s Timesheet fills itself out, is replaced by those of other Team Members, then by one from another team, then by spreadsheets and databases showing the aggregated data, illustrating her points.
Good Angel: …That’s you in the Time Entry format, just a matrix of functions and numbers. Now, here’s your Team … mostly same functions, but different proportions of time. Here’s another team … different functions. As you get more and more numbers, our matrix grows bigger and bigger. Now we start to have an understanding of where ISG as a whole is spending its time. We can make more informed decisions on what functions take the most time, what resources we need to allocate to them, where upgrading our technology will do the most good. But it all depends on you filling in your set of blocks.
Return to employee’s blank timesheet.
Employee: OK. So. Now what do I do?
Good Angel: First we must jump forward to the end of today!
[Time travel sound and effects.]
Employee: Wow, where did the time go?
Good Angel: Now, how did you spend your day?
Employee: It was the usual, let’s see [fills out form as he talks], there was the weekly Staff Meeting, Due Diligence [etc].
Good Angel: Now let’s jump to the end of the week.
[Effects]
Employee: Wheeeeeeeee! Friday night – its all right!
[PING! Bad Angel replaces Good Angel.]
Bad Angel: Ok, just throw some numbers in there, let’s blow this joint.
Employee: Actually, I forget what I did on Thursday, it’s all a blur.
Bad Angel: It doesn’t matter, nobody’s gonna read it anyway.
