Public Lead - 9248838 - Voice over narration for educational videos
9248838
Voice over narration for a number of educational videos, which will be shown in our long-term gallery "Intersections. World Arts. Local Lives."
Prior to recording of the narration, we would talk the script through on the phone, to make sure that all words are said correctly etc.
The attached script is one example of the scripts we would have to record. The length of the script varies, the sample script is one of the longer ones for voice over narration.

Visitor “Announce the name of the new clan house!”
Dancing man “Asaur! Asaur! I’m calling out the name, Asaur!”
Narrator The Kwoma people live in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. In February, 1996 a new ceremonial house was opened in the Tongwajamb area. Gutok Yantaka, the ageing patriarch of his hamlet, is the leading artist responsible for the designs of his lineage group, which are carved and painted by several men under his specialized supervision. Art is tied to a vigorous ritual cycle and the ceremonial clan house is the centre for these religious activities. The paintings and sculptures evoke memories of ancestors and their stories, and a man must go through a series of initiations at five-year intervals in order to progressively understand their significance. During the final days of preparation only initiated men participate.
Government
Rep “The name of this ceremonial house is Asaur. It belongs to two clans or groups, Asaur and Teki. I'm from another clan. I am not allowed to copy these designs. I have my own. Passed down from their ancestor, this was done as a tradition in their clan house … And his child learned and then his child learned it from him … on it goes.”
Narrator The interior of the ceremonial house is decorated with carved birds, animals, plants, and reptiles. The most prominent of legendary heroes sit at the base of the upright posts. Faces carved into the cross beams and onto dance masks represent spirits associated with the religious activities of the Yam cult
Narrator The ceiling is covered with painted panels made from the sheath of sago-palm leaf-stems. Their designs recall characters and incidents from ancestral histories. An important story is represented by the sculpture hanging from the ridgepole. It recalls a mountain that houses the nest of an eclectus parrot flanked by two mythic figures. In this story the mountain broke apart when the parrot was killed by a hunting party.
Gutok “The parrot — in our language we call it Apninjaka, My ancestor saw it and came and drew the design in our clan house. My ancestor was Ueau. He saw this himself. There’s a song about the breaking open of the mountain that has been passed down to us. [song is sung in the Kwoma language]”
Narrator With the preparations complete, the men gather on the roof of the ceremonial house and announce to the community that they are ready. The protective screen is cut down and the space is open to the uninitiated for the first time.
Narrator The celebration opening the Asaur clan house lasted three days and included two nights of dancing until dawn. In the concluding speeches, Gutok made it clear that this would be his final accomplishment.
Gutok “These designs have been in my care. Now I’m old and I’m going blind, and I’m handing it over to the younger men They will continue to be here.”
Government Rep “We will not abandon this. This culture will continue to be practiced until the earth is gone.”
