Script Details
It began as a holy instrument of mercy in the hands of a Roman soldier present at Christ’s Passion …
…and became one of history’s most powerful relics.
The Holy Lance… also called the Spear of Christ or the Spear of Destiny…
…has been linked to some of the history’s most miraculous episodes …
…powerful rulers … and devastating campaigns.
Today, four artifacts have survived the ages…
…one in Vienna, one in Krakow, one in the Vatican, and one in Armenia.
Each has its own history…its own stories… and each is acclaimed as the Holy Lance that pierced the side of Christ on the cross.
Their tales of faith, power and politics weave together to form a vivid tapestry…
… the legend of the Holy Lance.
The story of the Holy Lance and its power begins with the very moment of revelation for the Christian faith.
A veteran Roman soldier watches as a condemned man hangs on a cross just outside Jerusalem.
The soldier’s name is Longinus, and his orders were to track him closely…which he did, despite his weakening eyesight.
Perhaps he knew that this man, who claimed to be the son of God, would be executed, perceived as a heretic… a rebel… a threat.
So he watches… with failing yet sympathetic eyes, as Jesus dies on the cross between two common thieves.
It is Friday, the eve of the Sabbath.
So as to hasten the executions…
… and ensure that the bodies do not violate the purity of the holy day…
… Roman soldiers move from cross to cross, breaking the shins of the crucified men.
Anyone still alive will suffocate, unable to push up and take a breath.
But when the centurions approached Jesus, Longinus stops them.
There is no need to further desecrate the body, Longinus says. He is already dead.
As Longinus pierces Jesus’ side to prove it…
… his Lance is infused with miraculous power…
