Kashif. The name means " discover inventor, and magic maker."
You know him as a multi-platinum songwriter, record producer, Grammy- nominated award winning artist and author. During a career spanning four decades, you’ve heard the magic that he has woven through hit songs that have been recorded by a galaxy of superstars, including Whitney Houston, Kenny, G., George Benson, Barry White, and Evelyn “Champagne” King just to name a few.

He discovered recording processes that ushered in the age of digital recording.

He has invented software that is revolutionizing the way music makers are communicating and collaborating. And simply by living up to the meaning of his name he has left his mark in the fields of music, record production, music technology, music publishing, music education and software development.

How did this modern-day Renaissance man become one of the music industry's most innovative and progressive figures? It all started back when he was a young Brooklyn Boy.

* * *

Born Michael Jones at the tail end of America's great Baby Boom, Kashif was orphaned at the age of four months old. With his mother incinerated for reasons unknown to him, he became a ward of the state of New York and grew up being shuttled between eight different foster homes during the height of the '60s soul music era. Every few months kashif found himself in yet another abusive home. His world was one of great uncertainty. But at the tender age of seven Kashif found something that would become the common denominator in his perilous journey. And that something was music.

After learning to play a three-dollar song flute it became apparent to watchful eyes of his elementary school teacher that he was gifted. Over time his fascination with music took root and grew to the point where he took on trumpet, saxophone, piano, and drums.

And good fortune had found young kashif in more ways was than one. It was during this time that Kashif was welcomed into the home of two new foster parents. Edward and Vandella Simpson who had migrated from North Carolina and was now living in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. For the first time he was in a space where he did not have to worry about being abused or abandoned. And while he was honing his musical skills his new guardians were imparting life lessons that would serve him well on his long and winding road to success.

Unfortunately, in 1974, he lost his beloved foster mother, and just two years later in 1976, his foster father also passed on. Kashif once again found himself alone and was left to raise himself in the big city where only the strong survive. With music as both consolation and inspiration, he pressed on with the only tools he had, His determination and his music. A high school friend recommended him to her father, the manager of local-band-made-good, B.T. Express. The group had already charted with the enormously successful "Express" and "Do It Till You're Satisfied" when 15-year-old Kashif was recruited to be the bands newest and youngest member.

He recorded two albums with this funk outfit while perfecting his skills as a keyboardist. A few years earlier Kashif had displayed an interest in electronics and built his first stereo out of discarded circuitry. That curiosity was now showing up in his exploration what was then the relatively unknown mini-Moog synthesizer, A skill that would carry him far.

He exited B.T. Express in 1978 and did a two-year stint as keyboardist with the sensational Stephanie Mills. As the 80s dawned, Kashif hung out his shingle as a songwriter and producer. His first hit record was Evelyn "Champagne" King's irresistible "I'm In Love," which shot to Number 1 on the R&B chart in 1981. The sound was fresh and electrifying and later came to be known as the Kashif sound. He also produced her next two Number One smashes, "Love Come Down" and “Becha She Don’t Love You”

As time went on his interest in new technology grew to a point where technological giants like Sony, New England Digital, Kurzweil, and others were recruiting him for his knowledge, and innovative approach to help them gain the competitive edge. His worked with the New England Digital – the inventors of the first sampler, yielded spectacular results. He single-handedly invented all the practical uses for the syncalvier sampling system. His methods of recreating drum sounds, sampling lead and background vocals, and other production techniques soon became and remains the standard for recording to this day.

In 1983, Kashif signed to Arista Records and released his self-titled debut featuring the hits "I Just Gotta Have You (Lover Turn Me On)," "Stone Love," "Help Yourself to My Love," and "Say Something Love." Kashif recorded a total of five albums for Arista through 1989, creating some of the best-loved modern love songs along the way and earning six Grammy nominations. Including “baby Don’t Break Your Baby’s Heart”, “Are you The Woman”, “Send Me Your love”, “Edgar Town Groove” and Reservations For Two”. And who can forget “ Love Changes” a smash single recorded as a duet with Melisa Morgan.

Between 1980 and 1990, Kashif was music's man of the moment, shaking the R&B charts with 17 hit singles and four top 40 albums under his own name. He also added his musical magic to hits by others, most notably Whitney Houston's 1985 debut smash "You Give Good Love," George Benson's "Inside Love, " and Kenny G.'s first solo hit, "Hi How Ya Doin'." He worked steadily, creating music for Dionne Warwick, Howard Johnson, Melba Moore, Expose, Johnny Kemp, Jermaine Jackson, Hall & Oates, and many others.

Kashif had established himself as the first superstar artist-producer of the modern age, paving the way for later studio stars like Teddy Riley, Jam & Lewis, and L.A. & Babyface. To date, his list of songwriting credits includes songs recorded by Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Lil Kim, Da Brat, Chico & Coolwada, DMX, Will Downing, and others.

In 1996, Kashif looked to conquer new horizons. Years of performing and speaking around the world revealed to him that there was a hunger for information about the coveted world of music and entertainment. Inspired to provide practical answers, Kashif wrote his very first book, The New Record Industry Bible - Everything You'd Better Know About The Record Industry: The book was published under his own Brooklyn Boy Books imprint and helped launch his new website, brooklynboy.com. Earlier in that same year Kashif created and taught a course at University of California Los Angeles - UCLA entitled Contemporary Record Production With Kashif.

Struck by the education bug he decided to found Kashif University with the Two-day intensive course on how to be successful in the music business. He conducts a variety of college-level seminars and workshops both in real time and online through this "university without walls."

In 2002 Kashif launched Brooklyn Boy's Software division with Music Studio Organizer, a system of operating documents and procedures for the recording studio. Included are professional level lyric sheets, track sheets, invoices, labels, cue sheets, a scheduler, and more. Now Kashif is unveiling his most phenomenal product yet: Music Business 411. This dynamic new software program provides the user with the entire world of the music business at the touch of a computer keyboard. Based on years of painstaking research, Music Business 411 connects the user to more than 35 thousand music industry contacts in all musical genres, including record companies, radio stations, music retailers, talent agencies, publicists, media outlets, and much more, with names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. It also creates labels, letters, mailing lists, and other tools. Downloadable to both Mac and PC systems, this software guide is destined to become THE most essential business tool within the industry.

Even with a tightly wound schedule Kashif is determined to address and pursue his personal and life goals to provide opportunities for today’s at risk youth through music and sports. His company Brooklyn Boy Entertainment has provided scholarships for young aspiring music makers from as far away as Puerto Rico, New York, and Hawaii. His goal is to also bring a new face and image to foster care that would result in more effective systems, programs, and opportunities for young people in foster care. His innovative approach and creativity has already caught the attention of childcare advocates around the country.

A 2004 inductee into the R&B Hall Of Fame as a Living Legend, Kashif has made indelible contributions to the realms of music production, songwriting, book publishing, computer technology and software -- all at a relatively young age. Citing the influence of historic innovators like Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Leonardo DaVinci and Mahatma Gandhi, Kashif possesses the uncanny ability to spot untapped opportunities and to engineer marketable solutions. Through Brooklyn Boy Entertainment/Books/Music/Software & Education, he continues to be a torchbearer, lighting a path for others to follow.

He has over come adversity in his early years. His self published book has sold over 300,000 copies, He created and taught a course at esteemed UCLA. He has influenced the way music is recorded and produced. He's sold more than 70 million records worldwide, His technology will influence music makers for generations to come. All this with a high-school education

And when you put all of this together it is befitting to call him Kashif! Inventor, discoverer, and magic maker.
