When you hear the name Nestlé, the first thing that probably comes to mind is chocolate. What many moms don’t realize is that our company got its start making something much sweeter — infant formula!
Nestlé’s roots stretch all the way back to 1867, when a baby was born in the Swiss town of Vevey. The baby was born premature, and he refused all nourishment, including his mother’s breastmilk.
Fortunately, a family friend contacted a pharmacist named Henri Nestlé, who was living nearby. Henri created a unique mixture for his young neighbor, made with wholesome Swiss milk. Thanks to Henri Nestlé's special recipe, the baby didn’t just survive — he thrived. Today, Henri Nestlé’s mixture is widely recognized as the world’s first infant formula.
