Public Lead - 8152300 - This is for two characters, one...
8152300
This is for two characters, one female, one male. The project is the second in a series.
This is an animated parody of talking heads news. It goes pretty quick once you get the tone of the character. It will cut to about five minutes long total, all characters combined. I'll want to do a phone consult prior to recording.
The female character, INDA, is an Ann Coulter type in both look and attitude. Brusque and sharp. American english.
The male character PHIL, is a spokesman for middle east and far east countries. English may not be his native language, so the English from a non-US location is for this character.
NED is cast locally.

INTERNET CENSORSHIP

NED
Welcome back to the program. Internet giants Yahoo, Google, Cisco and Microsoft were called before Congress to explain their role, if any, censoring the internet in non-US markets. She's the public relations director for CALLOUS - Citizens Against Lame Losers Over the United States, Inda Vidua, welcome.

INDA
Hey Ned, glad to be back.

NED
He's the western liaison for CULTURE - the Consortium United to Limit The Undoing of Really Everything, Phil Terr, Phil welcome to the show.

PHIL
Hello Ned, thanks for having me on.

NED
Inda, let's start with you, what is it that these companies are doing that Callous objects to?

INDA
It's not the companies' fault, they do what the host nations demand, which is to put up a big filter at the electronic border, stopping content.

NED
Sort of a nationwide nannyware?

INDA
Well yeah, but the nannies aren't exactly the benevolent parent types.

NED
Phil, how does CULTURE respond to that?

PHIL
Ned, we are committed to providing the highest level of access to our citizens-

INDA
Then why the firewall at the borders?

PHIL
-to our citizens within the confines of what is acceptable to the cultures of the host nations.

INDA
Confines is right, you are confining your citizens to a limited window that doesn't include the entire discussion taking place.

PHIL
It may appear that way to you, with your culture of sex, drugs, rap and roll, but we have histories that go back thousands of years, so don't be so quick to preach down to us.

INDA
And what's worth keeping from thousands of years ago? Unless you mean religious oppression, oppression of women, minority oppression, oppression of free speech. My oh my, oppression could be one of your biggest exports.

PHIL
In addition to feeding your oil addiction, besting you in manufacturing, and buying most of your debt? How can you hurl accusations like that, have you ever visited any of our member nations?

INDA
Some of them I wouldn't want to, I don't like the idea of walking around in a body bag. BurKA, BurKA, BurKA...

PHIL
Not every, now listen to you, why should we tolerate such arrogance? With a mouth like that some discipline could do you well.

INDA
Can't take backtalk from a woman can you? Maybe you and your -member- nations need to grow up a little and stop acting like the juveniles you are. Tiny member nations more likely.

PHIL
Perhaps you just need a man not sedated with alcohol...TV, and, and...video games!

INDA
Ooooo, now you're talking. Trash.

PHIL
And I don't need Viagra either.

NED
Let's get back to the issue at hand, why not just let the internet be wide open and let each individual decide what's appropriate?

PHIL
Like pornography and hate speech? Even the Nazis are blocked in some parts of Europe, so it's not like we're alone in this.

INDA
Two wrongs don't make it right. And so what if some loser wants to look at dirty pictures while wearing combat boots in his bathtub, or whatever. If it keeps him off the street, then we're all safer for it.

PHIL
You may be cavalier about that behavior, but our societies have developed where such things are not accepted, these filters keep it out.

INDA
Ah come off it, people are the same everywhere, you suppress a desire in one place, it's just going to pop up, no pun intended, in another. The problem is that these filterbots tend to overfilter. One of them, Smartfilter, is so dumb that it blocks innocent sites, like Boing Boing.

PHIL
I don't know this Boing Boing.

INDA
Because it's been filtered! In part, for hosting art pictures that include a little nudity, like the Statue of David.

PHIL
I don't..

INDA
Hello? It's one of the most famous works of Michelangelo, the nude white marble guy?

PHIL
We draw the line much higher than you. First it's pictures of nude statues, then it's sex with box turtles, why go down the slippery slope?

INDA
What is it with conservatives and box turtles? Did I miss the party?

NED
Forget the turtles, what about political websites?

INDA
Now that's a real problem, websites, including blogs, are being taken down or filtered based not only on the ideas they contain. Some are blocked based on subject matter alone. In China sites on Tibet, or Tianamen Square are off limits. History is being re-written by deletion.

NED
Phil, how is that supportable, how do you justify muffling a voice, any voice?

PHIL
Our cultures are very conservative, by your measure of the word. New ideas take a long time to be acceptable. If we were to suddenly expose large numbers of our citizens, the result could be chaos.

INDA
New ideas always cause chaos, that's why they're called new ideas. Stop running away from the future.

PHIL
Easy for you to say, in some parts of the world new ideas lead directly to heads being chopped off. The old ways bring comfort, continuity, and are not easily abandoned.

INDA
That's another thing, you guys are big on beheading. What's up with that anyway?

PHIL
I don't see what that-

INDA
Yeah yeah, never mind. But if your people are so quick to start some head cutting, have you considered the possibility that you're doing something wrong?

PHIL
You have no right to give us advice. You limit free speech too, it's unlawful to shout 'fire!' In a crowded theater, for good reason, the common good.

INDA
But it shouldn't be unlawful to shout 'Democracy!' In a crowded country. You arrest people for spreading so-called false information, yet the government puts up patently false propaganda.

PHIL
The governments merely wish to promote the peace through a common set of beliefs.

INDA
It's groupthink over individual thought.

PHIL
There is safety for all in a cohesive group.

INDA
It's now a global village and the pool of common beliefs just got bigger for everybody.

PHIL
More the reason to preserve a national identity.

INDA
What we're seeing is the beginning of a digital divide that sets up a damaged internet for half the world, not something any of us want long term.

PHIL
That's a matter of opinion.

INDA
No it's not. To paraphrase, you're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

PHIL
Facts may not change, but information must be properly presented.

INDA
Information is information. You have filters in place that dump pages if they include the words freedom, or democracy. Filtering them out doesn't make them go away, what are you afraid of?

PHIL
We're not afraid of freedom or democracy-
(cut off)

NED
Uh oh, looks like the filters there are working now.

INDA
I was just getting interested.

NED
Inda, how about you, try that again?

INDA
What? Freedom and democracy?

NED
Huh, no problem on this end.

INDA
Yeah? Let's try - Universal health care.
(cut off)

NED
Whoops, that did it. But we're out of time anyway, come back after the break when we'll be taking a closer look at offshore banking and Haliburton-
(cut off)
On the nzane azylum!
