: Introduction.

The 21st century will see fundamental change in the ways we produce and consume energy—from fuel source to generation, transmission, distribution, and end-use.

For decades now, we in the industrialised world have been taking for granted the way we generate our energy.

We have to take urgent action to tackle the root cause of global warming - the burning of coal, oil and gas.

We may have to make very difficult choices, about how we live and how we generate our electricity.

We have been talking about such things for 20 years. But so far very little has been done in practical terms.

The recent alarming evidence of Global warming effects makes it clear that we are rapidly running out of time.

In today’s world of ever increasing energy prices, constant demand for growth and the consequent serious effects on our Climate, we have to take urgent action.

After all, we are all responsible for this and owe it to future generations to minimise our impact on our planet.

According to World Wildlife Fund's Global Climate Change Programme;

“The power sector is the biggest single polluter of greenhouse gases, responsible for 37 per cent of Carbon Dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels,”

So, what can we do?

Becoming environmentally friendly often results in problems of spending more money, becoming less competitive and struggling to use less energy.

Fortunately Green Energy Direct has part of the solution that reduces your energy costs, whilst helping you to do your part in Combating Climate Change.

2: Frame 1 Existing situation.

In the existing situation, all your building’s electricity is generated by remote power stations, and transported through the public electricity grid.

These power stations are normally fuelled by coal, gas, nuclear or oil.

All except nuclear produce vast amounts of carbon dioxide and, at best, are between 35 to 45% efficient.

The remaining 55 to 65% of the fuel’s energy is wasted as heat lost to the environment.

Also at least 3% of the electricity produced is lost in power transmission through the electricity grid.

All this wasted energy results in very high electricity prices of course.

In the animations you see here,(the unit energy prices per kWh are shown on the left of the building, the total costs for energy on the right side of the building).

The unit price of the imported electricity is shown, in the grey box - the definition box - as €e [euro “e”] per kWh [kilo watt hour].

Your resulting total payment is €e [euro “e”] to the Electricity company.

Your building is usually heated by on-site gas boilers.

The unit price of the gas is €g [euro “g”] per kWh [kilo watt hour], resulting in a payment of €g [euro “g”] to the Gas company.

Well managed heating systems, using modern gas boilers have a seasonal efficiency of around 80%, which means that 80% of the gas’s energy is converted into useful heat.

(For greatest accuracy this will be measured by independent specialists, before we install the cogeneration system).

It follows that the price you pay for that heat, €h [euro “h”] per kWh [kilo watt hour], is the gas price divided by the boiler seasonal efficiency, as shown in the definition box.

Of course, boilers also emit carbon dioxide as a result of burning the fuel.

In summary only 65% of the total energy consumed by the power station and boilers are used.

The Total Carbon Dioxide, or CO2 [“c” “o” 2], counter represents your building’s total emissions resulting from the use of the electricity from the grid and heat from the boilers.

Frame 2: New Situation with Green Energy Direct.

The most significant way of reducing energy costs and also carbon dioxide emissions is to generate electricity as efficiently as possible whilst using the inevitable waste heat. If this electrical and heat energy is then used at the point of production, additional transmission energy losses are also avoided.

This is the secret of cogeneration’s success at reducing energy costs and total carbon dioxide production.

Indeed the World Wildlife Fund has chosen cogeneration, fuelled by natural gas as the best solution for reducing energy costs and CO2 [“c” “o” 2] emissions.
It is widely agreed that Cogeneration will play an important role in securing our energy future by providing efficient, environmentally friendly electrical energy while extending the capacity of our fossil fuel supply.

Green Energy Direct’s Business Proposal.

Green Energy Direct will invest in the installation, maintenance and operation of the latest technology Cogeneration units on your premises, completely free of charge, and sell you the electricity from these units at a substantial discount compared to your normal supplier.

We will appoint and pay for top professional local companies to take care of all the cogeneration installation design, licences, operations and maintenance. We will also work closely with your building facilities manager at all stages to ensure maximum standard of works and NO disturbance to your business operations.

Here we see a cogeneration unit has been installed in your building which may be a Hospital, Hotel, Leisure centre or other similar energy intensive building, alongside your existing boilers.

Your building remains connected to the electricity and gas supply networks as before.

The cogeneration unit produces electricity that is fed into the building’s electricity system. The cogeneration electricity meter is showing that the unit is supplying about 70 to 75% of your building’s electricity demand. You will be able to view this via the internet through a secure access to our web site.

As a result, the meter measuring the public electricity supply imported to the building shows that you are now only importing about 25 to 30% of your building’s total demand.

At the same time, the cogeneration unit also produces heat which feeds into your building’s heating system.

This means that the boilers do not need to produce as much heat as they did before.

Therefore the boiler gas meter shows that the boiler is no longer supplying 100% of the heat demand, but only 20 to 25% of your total heat demand.

The cogeneration heat meter on the heat output line from the unit shows, in this case, that it is providing about 75 to 80% of the building’s heat demand.

Of the 100% of gas energy supplied to the cogeneration unit, typically 35% is converted into electricity and 55% into useful heat, at the same time. In other words maximum use is made of the fuel’s energy.

And, most importantly, all the energy generated is used on site.

This is the key to the value of cogeneration.

The unit price of gas supplied to the cogeneration unit is shown as €gc [euro “g” “c”] per kWh [kilo watt hour]. This is paid for by Green Energy Direct.

Green Energy Direct then sells you the cogeneration electricity at a discount of 15% below the lowest total unit electricity price you can get from the electricity market; including transport, distribution and other taxes, but excluding VAT).

In addition you benefit directly by saving on the resulting reduction in Maximum Demand charges.

This significant price reduction results in savings, €s, [euro “s”] shown as accumulating piles of money in your building.

If, as a result of cogeneration operation, the electricity company increases its price, by say, €x [euro “x”] per kWh [kilo watt hour], Green Energy Direct will compensate you.

This secures our guarantee on your NET 15% electricity discount and is shown by the payment line to the right of your building linking Green Energy Direct to the electricity company.

Heat from the cogeneration unit is accurately metered and sold to you at the same price, €h [euro “h”] per kWh [kilo watt hour], you already pay when using your boilers.

Which means our heat price is neutral. You pay no additional heating costs, whilst reducing your electricity costs.

Therefore the payment lines from you are:

the cost of the imported electricity at the original unit price in €e [euro “e”] per kWh [kilo watt hour], resulting in lower payment of €e [euro “e”] to the public electricity company,

the cost of boiler gas at the original unit price €g [euro “g”] per kWh [kilo watt hour],resulting in lower payment €g [euro “g”] to the gas company

the cost of cogeneration heat from Green Energy Direct, at a unit price €hc [euro “h” “c”] per kWh [kilo watt hour], which is the same as the boiler heat unit price €h [euro “h”] per kWh [kilo watt hour].

the cost of cogeneration electricity also from Green Energy Direct, unit price €ec [euro “e” “c”] per kWh [kilo watt hour], which is the electricity unit price €e [euro “e”] per kWh [kilo watt hour] less 15%.

To summarise, Green Energy Direct installs, operates and pays for the gas used by the cogeneration unit and then sells you the electricity generated at a price 15% lower than your lowest electricity price, while the price of heat stays the same.

The result is a far lower Total Energy costs than your existing situation.

In this new situation, over 80% of the total energy input for both the imported electricity and boiler are used compared with 65% in the old situation.

And of course there is much lower CO2 [“c” “o” 2] emissions.

You can see what happens when the cogeneration unit is switched off, for example due to maintenance, if you click the red “TURN OFF” on the bottom of the screen.

the cogeneration electricity and heat output meters go to zero

your payments to the gas and electricity companies increase to the values they were before cogeneration was installed

your payments to Green Energy Direct reduce to zero

Green Energy Direct continues to compensate you by paying for any additional electricity unit costs,

Now by clicking on “TURN ON” we can see how you continue to benefit from our services.

The savings start to increase again and the Total CO2 [“c” “o” 2] Meter shows a reduced rate.

Green Energy Direct will receive no payments from you if the Cogeneration unit is not operational.

Which means it’s the best guarantee you could ask for.

This ensures a win-win situation. The more you save the more we earn.

Frame 3: Benefits of Green Energy Direct Screen

Starting with the financial “bottom line”, the most obvious benefit of Green Energy Direct’s service is to reduce your electricity costs by a guaranteed 15%.

We also underwrite this price guarantee by paying for any imported electricity price increase, caused by our cogeneration operation.

You also save from any electricity Maximum Demand Charge reductions

Typical energy savings for various building sizes, as measured by their average electricity power demand, are shown on the lower band of this screen.

Are you interested? We think you will be.

But perhaps you are concerned about hidden costs or risks, and ask yourself, “What’s the catch?”

Well, there really aren’t any because we at Green Energy Direct also have to make a good return for our investors, and if you don’t save, we don’t earn.

By using 90% of the energy input effectively at the point of use instead of only 35% or less and transporting it thousands of kilometers, like normal power stations, we gain a huge competitive advantage over the main electricity utilities.

That’s why we can offer you such an attractive electricity price discount of 15% lower than any utility can ever offer, and still make an attractive profit.

We also benefit from government support and subsidy because of cogeneration’s acknowledged environmental benefits.

To summarise, you have absolutely no financial or technical risks when you sign Green Energy Direct’s Agreement.

As the World Wildlife Fund says,

“The bottom line is that a rigorous, well managed energy productivity program will deliver both competitive advantage and major reductions in greenhouse gases”

You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.
Humans have the ability to change the climate, but we can make good business decisions that also protect it.
