The ability to communicate with our fellow human beings…
It’s something that we learn at a very young age and that we normally take for granted…
Right now, as you listen to my voice, you don’t really give it too much thought…
The words flow out of my mouth effortlessly… just by thinking about them…
Yet, for many children and adults, forming simple words and sentences is a daunting task
These children suffer from Childhood Apraxia of Speech, a developmental disorder of the motor control for the speech production system.
The term Apraxia refers to a disorder of volitional or skilled movement routines.
It may be developmental or it may be acquired from following a stroke or other brain injury.
The developmental form of Childhood Apraxia of Speech or CAS is genetic in nature and it usually often runs in families.
Children who have suffered from CAS have difficulty learning and using the motor routines needed for to produce normal speech production.
