People who want a lot of personal attention from their bankers have traditionally turned to a handful of giant big city banks and elite trust companies. There, amid lush carpets, expensive furniture and fine art, they enjoy a bouquet of private banking services that have been out of reach for all but the wealthy.
Recently, though, many midsize and regional banks have entered the field, promising many of the perks - - if not the furnishings - - of the larger institutions for clients of less exalted means.
Many smaller local institutions like McAllen National Bank are packaging or working to pull together such services as one-on-one attention, investments, and trust and estate services. In contrast, many of the larger old-line institutions like J. P. Morgan Chase Bank, Wells Fargo and others do not seem to be very interested unless you can afford to entrust them with $3,000,000 or more. On the other hand, many of the smaller independent banks, like McAllen National Bank, that operate with less overhead and on a more personal basis are aiming at people with assets of $500,000 or more.
